Approximately95%ofthepopulationsuffersatsomepointintheirlifetimefromacnevulgaris.Acneisamultifactorialdiseaseof thepilosebaceousunit.Thisinflammatoryskindisorderismostcommoninadolescentsbutalsoaffectsneonates,prepubescent children,andadults.Topicalconventionalsystemsareassociatedwithvarioussideeffects.Noveldrugdeliverysystemshavebeen usedtoreducethesideeffectofdrugscommonlyusedinthetopicaltreatmentofacne.Topicaltreatmentofacnewithactive pharmaceuticalingredients(API)makesdirectcontactwiththetargetsitebeforeenteringthesystemiccirculationwhichreduces the systemic side effect of the parenteral or oral administration of drug. The objective of the present review is to discuss the conventionaldeliverysystemsavailableforacne,theirdrawbacks,andlimitations.Theadvantages,disadvantages,andoutcome ofusingvariouscarrier-baseddeliverysystemslikeliposomes,niosomes,solidlipidnanoparticles,andsoforth,areexplained.This paperemphasizesapproachestoovercomethedrawbacksandlimitationsassociatedwiththeconventionalsystemandtheadvances andapplicationthatarepoisedtofurtherenhancetheefficacyoftopicalacneformulations,offeringthepossibilityofsimplified dosingregimenthatmayimprovetreatmentoutcomesusingnoveldeliverysystem. 1.Introduction hyper proliferation of Propionibacterium acne, and inflam- matoryresponseinitiatedbybacterialantigensandcytokines Approximately95%ofthepopulationsuffersatsomepointin [8–14].
