Description:

Why write another book on Revelation? Does the world need another commentary on the book of Revelation? Scholars far more eminent than I have written books with thousands of pages, focused on this final book of the Bible. I saw problems in the current apocalyptic literature and decided to make an in-depth study of the book. This literary exercise has produced a revival and reformation in my own soul. I hope it does the same for you.

What follows is my own verse-by-verse understanding of the book of Revelation. What does Revelation say to us today? My work is not a completely original commentary, though it certainly involves no attempt to consciously plagiarize anyone’s work. Footnotes will give full credit for ideas not distinctly my own. I have not attempted to be original, where another’s charts, ideas, or graphs will make the best point. This book is a recapitulationist historicist commentary on the significance of Revelation for the Christian today.

After reading many works on Revelation, I’ve concluded that few scholars believe Revelation has much to say to the end-time Christian. Scholars write exegetical commentaries without understanding the symbols of the book as to persons and events in history. They see little to no end-time urgency in the message of Revelation and see no relevance in using Daniel to interpret Revelation. Can we still find a message of hope for the end-times by reading Revelation? The answer is Yes!

Many commentaries on Revelation are devoted to form criticism, source criticism, and historical criticism. Scholars call for more exegesis of the text of Revelation and less focus on the history it contains. They prefer to be politically correct in their works, without applying the symbolism to specific persons or events in history. As a result, the meaning of Revelation is largely obscured. We do not know who the beast is, we do not know what the seal of God is, and we do not know what the mark of the beast is. Many well-meaning Bible students have quit studying Revelation after seeing all the divisions among these commentators.
