A Belgian of Moroccan roots, Abaaoud, also known as Abu Umar al-Baljiki, traveled to Syria where he roseintheISISranksandrecruitedandtrainedotherforeignfighterslike himself.HeboastedofhissuccessinevadingEuropeanintelligenceservices during several of his trips between Belgium and Syria. He incited terror- ism and praised those who carried out attacks on his orders. “I ask Allah to accept the fruitful deeds of the shuhada’ who terrorized the crusaders ofAmerica,France,Canada,Australia,Germany,andBelgium,”Abaaoud shared.1 AbdelhamidAbaaoudgrewupintheMolenbeekdistrictofBrussels.Not many details are known about Abaaoud’s childhood, but his upbringing doesnotseemtostandout.HewasenrolledinanexclusiveCatholicschool, CollegeSaint-Pierred’Uccle,butwasexpelledfromit.2 Hesoonbecame involved in criminal activities and as a result spent time in prison.
