We want to thank all our discussion partners, mainly the many scholars who were involved in the Dreyfus-McDowell debate. In particular, there is one person—Richard Rorty, friend, adversary, and sparring partner—whose objections did much to improve our argument, and whose untimely death prevented him from poking holes in our fi nal version. Th is is just one of the many reasons why he is sorely missed today. We also want to remember another friend, Samuel Todes, whose path- breaking work has informed our thinking. Perhaps this book might help bring attention to his important contribution to the issues we discuss. We would also like to thank Geneviève Dreyfus and Muhammad Velji for their invaluable help in preparing the fi nal manuscript, and again Muham- mad Velji for his invaluable work in drawing up the Index. Portions of Chapters 1 and 2 were published in Mind, Reason, and Being-in- the-World: Th e McDowell-Dreyfus Debate, edited by Joseph K. Schear (Lon- don: Routledge, 2013), Chapter 3.
