Spiegel and I edited and published Contemporary Economists in Perspective, Greenwich, CT: JAI Press, a two-volume sequel to Spiegel’s The Development of Economic Thought:Great Economists in Perspective,New York: Wiley,1952. Like its famous predecessor, our collection comprised evaluations of the work of particular economists by other economists. One contribution was Fritz Machlup on Friedrich von Hayek, reprinted from the Scandinavian (formerly Swedish) Journal of Economics,1974. While proofreading with Michael Plummer, then a graduate student assistant, I discovered a surprise in a paragraph on what would be published on p. 268 in the first of the two Spiegel–Samuels volumes. Most of one paragraph (except for most of the first line) had been translated into Russian by the typesetter who had reset fresh type. The original xeroxed material comprises most of the long page pub- lished below. At the bottom is the long quote in the typesetter’s Russian-language translation. The second page is the contents of p. 268 of our collection, the Russian having been restored to the original English. One can surmise that a well- read typesetter did not sympathize with Hayek’s use-of-knowledge argument against central planning and decided to have fun with Hayek by translating his words into Russian. The translation had been discovered earlier by the publisher’s in-house proofreader. It remains only to note that the publisher of the Spiegel–Samuels volumes was the original publisher of this Annual.
