ABSTRACT TheTwenty-fifthSessionoftheCommitteeonFisherieswasheldinRome,Italy,from24to28 February2003.TheSessionwascharacterizedbyhighrepresentation,active|>articipationand significantoutcomesonsubstantiveissues.TheCommitteeapprovedaStrategyforImproving InformationonStatusandTrendsofCaptureFisheriesandrecommendeditsfurtherapprovalbythe FAOCouncil.TheCommitteefurtherrecommendedthatmonitoringoftheimplementationofthe StrategyconstituteanintegralcomponentofmonitoringtheimplementationoftheCodeofConduct forResponsibleFisheries.TheCommitteereaffirmedtheneedforglobalimplementationof measuresagainstIllegal,UnreportedandUrueguiated(lUU)fishingandrecommendedthatlUU fishingbeincludedintheAgendaoftheThirty-secondSessionoftheFAOConferencewithaview tocallingattentionofMemberstothisissue.TheCommitteerecognizedthecrucialimportanceof theCodeofConductanditsrelatedIntemai'.onalPlansofAction(IPOAs)inpromotinglong-term sustainabledevelopmentoffisheriesandencouragedMemberstoestablishandimplementNational PlansofActiontoputintoeffectthelPC.4sonCapacity,lUUFishing,SharksandSeabirds.The CommitteeagreedthattheDirector-GeneralofFAOshouldenterintoconsultationwiththeUnited NationsSecretary-Generalwithaviewtodefiningpracticalmodalitiesfortheimplementationofthe (PartVII)trustfund,tofacilitateth.:implementationofthe1995UNFishStocksAgreementby developingStatesParties,inparticulartheleastdevelopedamongthemandsmallislandStates.The Committeehighlightedtheimportanceofaquacultureandsmall-scalefisheriesasmeanstoincrease fisheryproductiontogenerateincomeandforeignexchangetoalleviatepoverty,toincreasefood securityandtoprovidefordiversificationofemployement.TheCommittteeidentifiedkeypriority areasofworkfortheFAOFisheriesDepartmentduringthebiermium2004-2005andtheareasof workforitsSub-CommitteesonFishTradeandAquaculture.TheCommitteeagreedtothe conveningofanumberoftechnical/expertconsultationsonspecificareasoffisheries,including reviewofprogressonpromotingtheimplementationofIPOA-IUUandIPOA-Capacity,onport Statesmeasurestoprevent,deterandeliminatelUUfishing,onseaturtlesinteractionsand conservation,onsubsidiesandtheConventiononInternationalTradeinEndangeredSpeciesof WildFaunaandFlora(CITES)relatedissuesforcommercially-exploitedaquaticspecies.
