These items are real; they make a difference; and theyhave a common characteristic: They all depend on volunteers. Magicallythe gazebos appear decked out forthe season. Town buildings are decorated forthe Holidays. The winter airstrip onthe bay suddenly appears. Spring clean-up crews are seen along the roads. Summerteam sports are organized. Aplan to restore the Town beach is drafted. A videotape ofa Town activity appears on public access TV. Fund- A raisers are organized forthe library and safety departments. foodpantry is open. Exhibits are displayed in the Town Hall. A book discussion group is organized. Plans for a newpark take reality as a restored caboose is lifted in to place. Thanksgiving A baskets and Christmas gifts are delivered to the needy. history ofAlton veterans is complete. We are sure that each ofyou canthink ofmany other such items in addition to the above briefexamples. In one case we cite the contributions by a group ofvolunteers, whose journalistic achievements provided our Town with many years of"Main Street" publications.
