This is whatRepairingtheAmericanMetropolis is about, andwhyitisimportant.Indeed,theuseof"metropolis"inthetitleissignificant, evokingatoncethetraditionalideaofanimportantplaceofconcentration(which citieshavealwaysbeen)andthemorecontemporaryimageofalargeurbanized regionmadeupofmanyplacesbutstilldefinedby,notrecedingfrom, itsessen tialcenter. Amonganumberofindicatorsforanurbanrevivalisaculturalenthusiasm for citiesthathasbeen absent, orcertainlyrare, for severalgenerations among Americans.
