Nowadays, acontinuousincreaseinwaterdemandisobservedasaconsequenceofdemographicgrowth,industry demand,andlivingconditions. Atpresent,thesocietiesofdevelopedcountriesareawareofthe importanceofwaterquality,especiallyinwesterncountries. Itisamatterofconcernthathalfof theEuropeancountriesarealreadyfacingwaterstress. AccordingtotheEuropeanEnvironmental AgencyReport,onlyaround40%ofsurfacewaters(rivers,lakes,andtransitionalandcoastalwaters) areingoodecologicalstatusorpotential,and38%areingoodchemicalstatus[1].Anintensiveuse ofchemicalsineverydayactivitiesandunrestrictedaccesstomedicineshasresultedinincreased wasteproductionandanintenseemissionoftypicalaswellasneworganiccompoundsintothe surroundingenvironment.Inrecentyears,thenewlyoccurredcompounds,calledemergingorganic contaminants(EOCs),arebecomingmoreandmoreobservable.
