Malegenitaliaofthesespeciesarefiguredandakeytothespeciesisprovided. This paperisthefirstpartofaseriesofredescriptionsfortheJapaneseHo/olepta,andcon- tainsadescriptionofthegenus, akeytotheJapanesespeciesandaredescriptionof a,nM,e,7sl's. Introduction ThegenusHo1oleptaPAYKuLLisamaingroupinthetribeHololeptiniofthesub- familyHisterinae. Themembersofthisgenus are known from 117 species in the world(MAzuR,1984),andhavebeendividedinto2subgenera, Ho1o/e1(cid:3)taandLeio7'ota. The former occursinJapan. InhisfirststudyoftheJapaneseHo1olepta, LEWIS(1884) recordedamu,(cid:4)enslsand described deptossa and para//e/a. Afterwards, he (1894) proposed the newname higoniaeforhispara11ela,becausethisnamewaspreoccupied. ADAcHI (1930)studied thesespeciesand prepared a key to them. NAKANE (1963) and HISAMATSu (l985) gavephotographsoftheadultsof theJapanesespecies. Upto thepresent, however, thegenitaliaofthesespecieshavenotbeenstudiedindetail. Inthisstudy, Iamalsogoingtorecognizetheth1-eespeciesandtoredescribethem. Themalegenitaliaofthespeciesandseveraltaxonomicfeaturesarefigured. In this part, adescriptionofthegenusandakeytotheJapanesespeciesareprovided, and oneof thespecies, amurensis, is redescribed. Thesubsequentpartofthisserieswill containredescriptionsoftheother twospecies.
