EDITOR’S LETTER Hit reset T he summer has been balmy, but now there’s a chill in the air that signals a new season – and there’s nothing like that ‘back to school’ feeling (even if it’s just a hangover from our own childhoods) to prompt new beginnings and inspire change. This issue is dedicated to both and jam-packed with autumn trends and exciting ideas to help us re-energise all areas of our lives. We start on page 12, with five key trends to invest in (or unearth from our wardrobes) for the season ahead. In the spirit of buying less, but buying better, it’s not always about splashing out on new clothes; it could be styling those we already own differently – as seen in Colour Equations on page 20 – or even buying one accessory to instantly update everything else, such as the silk ties and neck scarves on page 23. There’s an argument for being timeless over trendsetting anyway – in both fashion and beauty – and it’s a philosophy Hannah Betts debates in Stick Or Twist on page 88. We forge into the new season in our Living section, too, where we present the latest texture trends – from lacquer to lived-in leather – on page 106, and food writer and fruit farmer James Rich shares the autumn recipes inspired by his family’s orchard on page 112. If, like me, you spend some time on your sunlounger each summer FROM TOP: New-season musing over what’s next in your career, I hope you’ll find the women tailoring on page 28 an inspiration. From page 154, we countryside look at some of the symptoms women experience in the decade before with James menopause, then on page 156, offer advice on the best ways to manage Rich’s recipes these. Finally, on page 163, Christie Watson tackles the cultural taboos that (page 112); explore the cling on, despite a collective desire to approach the menopause with a more trends in optimistic attitude. I reflected on this while buying tampons the other day. textures for As a teenager, I found this mortifying – will I feel similarly distressed when the home Y C I no longer need them? As Watson notes, ‘The growing menopause positivity (page 106) N GE movement is a welcome challenge to this narrative. Still, it’s not easy to A E embrace this change in our bodies and minds while disregarding the cultural N R E implications that have been woven into our society.’ V A T I’d love to hear what you think – and if there’s / N WE anything else you want to see more of in Red.
