The Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Operation Duke Recovery of a BV-206 Vehicle from Muskeg 2007-2008 A Presentation by 17 Wing, EME The RCEME Heritage Archives 17 Wing EME Presents Operation BV Tale Situation • On 16 April 2008 staff from CFSSAT were transporting students from the training area near Springer Lake at the end of Trg. • They were using a known route. • Due to warm temperatures the week prior, the route was no longer passable by vehicle. • The BV206 being used broke through the ice in a marsh area. Mission • Recover a BV206 Vehicle from Grid Ref 2066 9540. • Extraction to take place as soon as possible to minimize environmental hazards and extended damage to vehicle. 16 April 2008 • Recovery was notified at 08:30 hours on 16 April 2008. • Crews were dispatched to the area surrounding Springer Lake Manitoba. (09:15) (ETA 14:00) • Crew is to extract BV206 from marsh and transport it back to Maint at 17 Wing. • Due to the rising water covering access routes, the recovery team was unable to get equipment to the BV206. • They did conduct a recce by foot. Conclusion 16 April 2008 • Crews are unable to enter area due to high water from spring run off. • Wait one week and attempt again. • Environmental is involved and measures are being taken to prevent Hydro Carbon damage to water ways. • Do a staff check with military and civilians to establish what types of vehicles are available to assist in recovery operations.
