Abstract Seven species of thecarabid subtribe Carabina are recorded from
Heishui XianandMaoXianofnorthernSichuan,SouthwestChina,withdescriptionsof
thefollowingfivenewsubspecies: psoca,・a加slat,-o'naif7/aensis,Megodontoidese1'一川
helshule,?sis, M e maox;ianensis,Neoplesius lixianenslscalgaiensisandPseudocranion
gansuensiska1ongensis.
Thecarabid faunaofHeishuiXianandMaoXianinnorthernSichuan,Southwest
China,havebeenpoorlyknownasyet,incontrast tothoseof thesurroundingareas
suchasSongpanXian,BarkamXianandLiXian,whichhavebeenratherwellinvesti-
gatedasreportedforseveraltimesbypreviousauthors.Earlyinthesummerof2001,I
hadanopportunitytomakeabriefsurveyintheabovetwoprefecturesandsucceeded
incollectingaseriesofinterestingformsofthesubtribeCarabina. Inthispaper, Iam
goingtorecordsevenspeciesandintroducefivenewgeographical racesintoscience.
Fortheappljcationofthegenericnamestoeachspecies,I followthenewestsystem
proposedbymyself(IMURA,2002a,b;seeotherpagesofthisvolume).Theabbrevia-
tionsusedhereinarethesameasthoseexplainedinpreviouspapersofmine.

Description. Length:23.9mm(includingmandibles).Differsfromnominotypi-
ca1latroSEMENov (typelocality:“Ta-tz'ao-pin”=Mt.Dacaoping[大草坪],ca 30km
NNE fromPingwu,onthebordersbetweenSichuanandGansu)asfollows:1)body
larger;2)dorsalsurfaceapparentlymoreblackish;3)headalittlemorehypertrophic;
4)mediantoothofmentumlonger,almostthesameinlengthasthoseoflateral lobes;
5) posterior parts ofpronota1sides lessremarkably reflexedabove; 6) elytramuch
moreelongate,withtheprimaryintervalsnarrower,mediancostaeofthetertiaryinter-
valsalsonarrowerandmuchlessstronglyraised.Fromsubsp minshanensisDEuvE*,
thenewraceisdiscriminatedbyalittledarkerbody coloration, alittlemorecoarsely
rugu1ose frons,narrower pronotumwithmoresharply pointed hindangles, alittle
moreeffacedshoulders,alittleweaker tertiary costae,and lessstrongly developed
granulationaroundtheumbilicateseries.Evidentlydifferentfromsubsp huang1ongen-
szsDEuvE(type locality: Huang1ong, 3,300m) in largersize, darker coloration,nar-
rower and longer pronotumwithmoresharply pointedhindangles,moreeffaced
shoulders,longerelytra,andmuchmoreregularlycostateelytra1intervals.

Description. Length: 29.3-33.0mm (including mandibles). Differs from
nominotypica1erwiniMANDL(typelocality:Wenchuan)asfollows:1)dorsalsurface

less remarkably rugu1oseanda littlemorestronglypunctate; 4)antennaea little

Fromsubsp.ples1olabrusDEuvE(typelocality:LiXian),thenewraceisdiscriminated
bymuchmoregreenishcoloration,differentshapeoflabrumanddifferentlysculptured
elytra1surface.Endophallus,whichisillustratedanddescribed forthefirsttimeatthe
specieslevel,asshowninFig.1:ostiumloberobustand faintlybilobedattip,neither
BL norMLdeveloped inendophallus,PREwiththeright loberathersharplypro-
truded,PARwe11-deve1ope PPlargeandsymmetrical,ALunremarkable,PLconspic-
uouslyprotrude AGGslightlysclerotizedandpigmentedto formapairofshort ter-
minalplatesonbothsides,1aciniaindicatedbyafin-likethinridge.

inaltitude.ItissympatricwithHo1osomasp.whoseuppersurfaceofelytraissimilarly
greenish(seeIMURA&MlzUsAwA,2002,p 25),suggestingthatthesetwospeciesbe-
longingtotwodifferentsubfamiliesshowaconvergence.
