Wheaton & Co., Ltd., Exeter PREFACE The Royal Society and COGENE (The Conmiittee on Genetic Experimentation) were the joint sponsors of an international Conference on recombinant DNA which was held at Wye College, Kent, UK between 1-4 April, 1979. In the belief that the papers presented, and the ensuing discussions, will be of interest to a much wider audience than could be at Wye College, the proceedings are being published on behalf of COGENE. The Conference was called to review the current status of recombinant DNA research and to discuss matters such as the scientific advances in, and practical applications of, recombinant DNA research, the conjectural hazards and the regulation of the research through guidelines and legislation. The Conference was attended by 150 scientists and other participants from more than 30 nations. All the sessions were recorded and the master tapes have been given to the Recombinant DNA History Project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge^ Mass., USA, to which there will be free access. During the meeting the discussions following the lectures were transcribed and made available for the participants to check and clarify where necessary. Where substantial changes or additions were made, the fact has been noted on the text. These proceedings are grouped into the sessions as they occurred at the meeting and comprise, in the main, a chairman's introduction, a summary of the lecture, and the entire discussion following a lecture or lectures. Our arrangement with the publishers is to achieve a rapid publication and we thank the speakers for prompt submission of their manuscripts and those who participated in the discussions for their cooperation in quickly checking and returning their comments. We would also like to thank Wye College and in particular their Audio Visual Unit for recording the sessions. Special gratitude is due to Carolyn Ison and Linda Reading for transcribing the tapes at the meeting and again to Carolyn Ison for putting these into their final manuscript form and assembling the typescripts.
