The26thInternationalConferenceonIndustrial,EngineeringandOtherAp- plicationsofAppliedIntelligenceSystems(IEA/AIE-2013),heldinAmsterdam, The Netherlands, followed the IEA/AIE tradition of providing an international scientific forum for researchers in the diverse field of applied intelligence. In- vitedspeakersandauthorsidentifiedchallengesinthe applicationsofintelligent systems in real-life settings and proposed innovative solutions. We received 185 papers, out of which 71 were selected for inclusion in these proceedings, re- sulting in a selection rate of 38.4%. Each paper was reviewed by at least two members of the Program Committee, thereby facilitating the selection of high- quality papers. The papers in the proceedings cover a wide range of topics, including knowledge representation and reasoning, robotics, cognitive model- ing, planning, machine learning, pattern recognition, optimization, text min- ing, crowdmodeling, auctionsandnegotiations, andevolutionaryalgorithms. In addition, several special sessions were organized as part of the IEA/AIE-2013 conference, namely, sessions on innovations in intelligent computation and ap- plications; intelligent image and signal processing; business process intelligence; machine learning methods applied to manufacturing processes and production systems; advances in recommender systems; and finally a special session on de- cision support for safety-related systems. These proceedings, consisting of 71 chapters authored by participants of IEA/AIE-2013,cover both the theory and applicationsofappliedintelligentsystems.Together, these papershighlightnew trends and frontiers of applied intelligence and show how new research could lead to innovative applications of considerable practical significance. We expect that these proceedings will provide useful reference for future research. Theconferencealsoinvitedthreeoutstandingscholarstogiveplenarykeynote speeches. They were Matthias Klusch from DFKI Saarbrucken in Germany, EmileAartsfromEindhovenUniversityofTechnology,TheNetherlands, aswell as Jan-Peter Larsen from SENSE Observation Systems, based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. VI Preface Of course, this conference would not have been possible without the help of manypeopleandorganizations.Firstandforemostwewanttothanktheauthors who contributed to these high-quality proceedings. The selection of the papers wasmadebaseduponthe recommendationsofthe ProgramCommittee, andwe thank you for devoting your time to provide high-quality reviews and enable the selection of papers to compose this volume. In addition, we would like to thank the Special Session Chairs for their efforts that truly contributed to the quality and diversity of the program. We thank VU University Amsterdam for itssupportintheorganizationoftheconference.Ofcoursewewanttothankour main sponsor, ISAI, and the associate sponsors Almende B.V., the Benelux As- sociationforArtificialIntelligence, andtheMunicipalityofAmsterdamfortheir support.Thefollowingcooperatingorganizationsalsodeserveourgratitude:the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the Associ- ation for Computing Machinery (ACM/SIGART), the Austrian Association for Artificial Intelligence (GAI), the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA), Delft University of Technology, the European Neural Network Society (ENNS),theInternationalNeuralNetworkSociety(INNS),theItalianArtificial Intelligence Association(AI*IA), the JapaneseSociety for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI),theLithuanianComputerSociety-ArtificialIntelligenceSection(LIKS- AIS), the Slovenian Artificial Intelligence Society (SLAIS), the Spanish Society for Artificial Intelligence (AEPIA), the Society for the Study of Artificial In- telligence and the Simulation of Behaviour (AISB), the Taiwanese Association forArtificialIntelligence(TAAI),theTaiwaneseAssociationforConsumerElec- tronics (TACE), and Texas State University-San Marcos.
