Adoptingdifferentinterpretationsoftheprovidentialmeaningofthewar,three groups—Confederates, northerners, and freedmen—defined what the religious reconstructionoftheSouthshouldmean. Theinteractionamongthesevisions determinedthecontoursofreligiousreconstructioninthe1860sand1870sandshaped muchoflate-nineteenth-centurysouthernreligiouslife. ConfederateChristians,confidentoftherighteousnessofslaveryandsecession, believedthatGodpermittedtheoverthrowoftheConfederacy,butwaschastising,rather thanjudging,southernersfortheirsins. Thisfinedistinctionwascrucialtosouthern evangelicals'self-understandinginthepostwarperiod.
