This,then,isaFestschrift.ButitisnotatypicalFestschrift.Itincludesscholarswho are,moreorless,sympathetictotheideasaboutnaturallawthathehasarticulated,and scholarswhoarecriticalofthoseideas(andinsomecases,ofthenaturallawtradition broadly).Moreover,itwasalwaysourintentiontoinviteJohnFinnistooffersomesort ofresponse,andhekindlyagreed.But,tohissurpriseasmuchasours,his‘Reflections and Responses’ developed into a serious engagement with the main arguments, or otherimportantissuesraised,inalmostalltheessays,andthusintosomethingofthe substantial length we now see. This venture was timely: his Collected Essays, and a second edition of Natural Law and Natural Rights, both of which include important newmaterial,appearedin2011.Contributorstothisvolumehavewrittentheiressays inlightofthosepublications. TheinfluenceofJohnFinnis’swork,especiallyamongyoungerscholars,isgrowing globally, particularly in the UK and the US. We trust that this volume will promote evengreaterinterestin,andunderstandingof,histhought,notleastbyclarifyingpoints of agreement and disagreement with leading thinkers representing a wide range of perspectives. We end on a very sad note. One of the contributors was to have been a brilliant, youngerscholarofnaturallaw:DrAmandaPerreau-SaussineoftheFacultyofLawin theUniversityofCambridgeandofQueens’College,Cambridge.Amandadiedbefore shecouldcompleteheressay.Requiescatinpace.
