Collecting samples, the forensic team analysed the scene of the bakery to determine the tragic events that had unfolded that morning: Jimmy, a sweet boy from a loving family who had just turned 16 the day before, had gone out to buy his first lottery ticket when he had crossed paths with local small-time thug Jake Fahri, a 19-year-old bully from Greenwich. Fahri started an altercation in the bakery, targeting Jimmy’s younger brother, who was with him. When brave Jimmy stood up to him, Fahri lashed out and launched a hot glass dish into Jimmy’s face. It smashed to pieces on impact, and a one-and-a-half-inch glass shard pierced Jimmy’s neck, severing vital blood vessels. Covered in blood, Jimmy staggered to the back of the bakery to shield himself from the rage of a local hooligan but bled out, dying in the arms of his older brother who had rushed to the scene to help. 8 CASE NOTES mages Getty I © 9 CASE NOTES California, USA, 21 August2020 THE GOLDEN STATE KILLER SPEAKS For decades men and women had lived in fear of a California killer, a man they feared would never be caught, but decades later, with the serial killer in chains, they heard an apology from his lips D ressed in orange prison garbs, 74-year-old former police officer Joseph DeAngelo arose from a wheelchair to address victims and their families who had been devastated by his sick and twisted deeds. For some it was the first time they had heard the serial killer speak since the night he changed their lives forever. “I’ve listened to all your statements. . . each one of them,” DeAngelo said, referencing the victim impact statements they had bravely delivered, “and I’m truly sorry to everyone I’ve hurt”. Audible gasps escaped the mouths of those sitting in the courtroom. DeAngelo, who had sat hunched in a wheelchair, had finally admitted to a plethora of sadistic rapes and murders spanning 11 California counties between 1975 and 1986 that had victimised at least 87 people at 53 separate crime scenes and stumped detectives for decades. His modus operandi – which saw the media dub him the ‘East Area Rapist’ and then the ‘Golden State Killer’ – was breaking into people’s homes in the middle of the night, subjecting them to sadistic psychological torture, binding the residents, raping and murdering the women, then killing their partners. Some were simply shot when they tried to intervene. His identity had remained a mystery since his final known crime in 1986. But now, in the harsh light of day and the justice of the courts, he had nowhere to hide. 10
