Li Hongjun Foreword I In Mar 2009, the epidemic of human infected swine fl u broke out in Mexico. Soon later, it spread globally, with more than 100 countries involved. Initially, WHO initially nominated the in fl uenza epidemic as human infected swine fl u. Later it was renamed as In fl uenza A (H1N1). On Jun 11th, 2009, WHO announced warning level of In fl uenza A (H1N1) as pandemic levels 6. In China, con fi rmatively diagnosed cases of In fl uenza A (H1N1) were reported in 31 main- land provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Infl uenza A (H1N1) is caused by a strain newly emerging viruses, which is infectious and attacks respiratory tract of human being. Pneumonia, as its important complication, affects its progression and prognosis. The diagnostic imaging plays important roles in its diagnosis, con- ditions understanding and prognosis assessment. And the diagnostic imaging is also valuable in indicating lesions of nervous and digestive systems. The authors of this book systematically and brie fl y introduce the origin, epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathological changes, clinical manifestations, laboratory and special tests, crite- ria of clinical diagnosis, treatment and nursing care, prevention and control of In fl uenza A (H1N1). Its focus is on the diagnostic imaging of the illness, with detailed cases studies. The book facilitates the readers to comprehensively understand In fl uenza A (H1N1). The book is edited by two professors, Prof. LI Hongjun and Prof. LI Ning, who organized many professionals in the fi eld to complete the writing and editing in a relatively short period of time. The book has rich contents, clear illustrations with fi gures and texts, which is informa- tive and practical for practitioners of diagnostic imaging. Also it has important reference value to radiologists and related clinicians. Therefore, I am delighted to write the preface, as refer- ence for readers. Mar, 2010 Academician of Chinese Engineering Academy Fuwai Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences vii Foreword II In fl uenza A (H1N1) virus is a complex combining characteristics of swine fl u viruses, human fl u viruses and avian fl u viruses. And pigs act as the mixer of these fl u viruses, playing impor- tant roles in infecting new hosts across species barrier. Because In fl uenza A (H1N1) virus is capable of directly infecting human bodies, and spreading through the respiratory tract. The alveoli are target cells of the virus and the infections of the viruses may cause diffusive fi brosis of the pulmonary tissues and alveolar impairments. Therefore, alveolar congestion, edema and surface exudates of thick fl uids as well as foam liked exudates in bronchioles, viscous liquid with fi brin in chest cavity would bring about a series of imaging morphological changes. However, the large scale study on pathogenesis of In fl uenza A (H1N1) by imaging of lungs and other related organs is still insuf fi cient internationally. Domestically, it is still blank. According to the primary study on its global spreading, In fl uenza A (H1N1) virus can cause diseases or even death, with a global death rate of 6.4 %. Therefore, the research will bene fi t the clinical observations and objective assessment of the disease progressions. And the achievements will signi fi cantly guide the works in effective control of the spreading and decreasing morbidity. The contents of the book include cases data collected from clinical practices, which is detailed, complete and authentic. The book systematically and brie fl y introduces the origin, epidemiology, pathogenesis and pathological changes, clinical manifestations, laboratory and special tests, diagnostic criteria, imaging diagnosis, treatment and nursing care, prevention and control of In fl uenza A (H1N1). The book provides scienti fi c basis for clinical diagnosis, being valuable and of great signi fi cance for clinician to treat patients and to formulate therapeutic plan. The book is divided into 4 parts and 17 chapters, with more than 800 fi g ures and pictures, and more than 0.4 million words. The imaging demonstrations and pathological characteris- tics of the respiratory system, digestive system and nervous system are generally introduced and comparatively described. And the cases are demonstrated in cases studies. All of these facilitate readers comprehensively understand and appreciate In fl uenza A (H1N1). For each case presentation, the case history and laboratory tests are fir stly narrated, followed by diag- nostic imaging, pathological examinations and the diagnosis, which is scienti fi c and practical. Prof. LI Hongjun dedicated much painstaking efforts and wisdom to this book. In a short period of time, he led his team attempting to design, implement and edit the book with a high sense of social responsibility and rigorous scienti fi c attitude. Now the book has a comprehen- sive system, accurate and clear illustrations and rich contents, which will serves to popularize and improve people’s awareness of In fl uenza A (H1N1).
