Most young scholars are lucky to have the support of a single great mentor. I was blessed with four. As my dissertation advisor, David Hollinger guided this book from start to finish. At crucial junctures during this project, he offered wise advice and helped sharpen the book’s methods and arguments. Perhaps more important, this book is deeply indebted to the approach to intellectual history that I learned from him. My work on Mills began with an under- graduate thesis completed in 1997 at the University of Virginia under the direction of Nelson Lichtenstein. Reading over my thesis recently, I saw that I thanked Nelson for his “intellectual and political guidance.” That gratitude remains today. During the past decade Nelson provided continued encouragement and criticism, and our many conversations about Mills over the years helped shape this work. Time and again, Howard Brick offered me invaluable feedback on the manuscript. I am very grateful for his challenging comments, which inspired many a revision, and to his understanding of twentieth-century American social thought, which proved a crucial influence on my own.
