The author reminds us that infec- tion is not invariably transmitted by a bite, and that in certain circumstances a lick can be dangerous—even a lick from an animal as yet showing no symptoms. The inhalation of ‘infected’ air has also proved fatal. The author describes the illness in both animals and man—classical rabies, vampire- bat rabies, the ‘Oulou fato’ type in Africa, and the Arctic form—and pre- sents experts’ opinions on wildlife sources of infection such as foxes, mongooses, skunks, bats, and wolves. While the book offers a rabies in the past, of str tic ‘cures’ which failed, by smothering, of peopl to this dreaded disease, forward-looking and outlin research.
