Today, rabbits are commonly kept as companion animals and are now increasingly popular pets for both children and adults, often being kept as ‘house rabbits’ indoors as a member of the family. Our understanding of a pet rabbit’s physical and behavioural needs has made important advances since the first edition of the book was published, and this is reflected in this new edition. Rabbits are intelligent animals with husbandry requirements for adequate space, exercise, companionship and environmental stimulation. Better understanding of a rabbit’s dietary needs has led to an improved quality of life for pet rabbits, improved commercial diets and greater awareness of the pathogenesis and treatment of rabbit dental disease. There is still, however, a real need for further research into these subject areas to develop a better veterinary understanding and to improve client education. We hope that this book will encourage those who read it towards this goal. The expectation for high quality veterinary care of pet rabbits continues to drive great advancements in the field of rabbit medicine and surgery. This is a rapidly expanding area of veterinary practice, and there are increasing numbers of information sources available to veterinary personnel. This book is unique among those sources in that it is a practical, easy-to-read, photographic illustrated reference book, extremely useful both in a clinical situation to help diagnose and treat a clinical case and also as a revision source or test of knowledge for those taking graduate or postgraduate examinations in exotic animal medicine. This book is designed to cover all major categories of rabbit medicine and surgery from basic biology and husbandry to more advanced diagnostic, medical and surgical techniques. In the new edition there is an increased emphasis on diagnostic and imaging techniques, as well as recent advances in emergency care, analgesia and rabbit surgery. All the questions have been updated, with the addition of many new illustrations, and new questions have also been added. This is not intended to be a comprehensive text, and no references are given. We have drawn on our own experience and the expertise of experienced rabbit clinicians to provide a wide range of cases and scenarios. In some cases the answers will not be definitive but will be based on the personal experience and opinion of the author. Drugs, where listed, are defined by their generic name and may not be available in all countries. It should also be noted that few drugs are licensed for use in pet rabbits, and there will be country-specific legislation governing the prescription of drugs for this species by veterinary surgeons. vii K26154_Book.indb 7 03/03/16 8:27 pm We hope that readers will find this book informative as well as an enjoyable means of learning new facts, modifying their clinical approach to cases and consolidating their existing knowledge.
