The two of you were my introduction to EAC at the St. Louis Convention in 2006 and I will always be grateful to both of you for your warm and immediate acceptance of a newcomer! I see that a coin that you once owned and purchased from the Roger Cohen fixed price list and sold in the 2002 EAC Sale is up for auction in The Goldberg Auction in September. I am starting to work on die states of the 1808 C2 and am planning to bid on it. Is there any information on the coin that you know of besides what is in the catalog (history etc). I am also working on a query to EAC about pedigrees and when they are used/not used in auction catalogs. This coin is pedigreed to you in this sale but not in the 2002 sale. I am curious as to why. Since the EAC Convention this past spring I have upgraded my 1809 Cl with the coin from the Gene Braig Collection. It is slow going when your collection becomes further advanced! EAC 2010 is already on my calendar. I hope to see you there. Perhaps it is at the office and I can see it Monday. In the meantime, what does the catalogue say ? According to my records, I bought two specimens of the 1808 C2 from Roger's FPL. The normal die state I still have, and I kept the one with the broken die until the EAC Sale. I will look up Roger's list to see what pedigree, if any, he listed for the coin. Don's death was a personal loss. We had been friends for decades, and one does just not expect a friend who is so much younger to predecease oneself. Central Standard Time From: To: Hi Tett, I wanted to update you on the status of my workings with Roger's material. 1) I have finished making a first pass through all of the boxes, and I have started to organize the material into boxes where the material in each is somewhat related. I will review it again as I go through and organize it. Tentatively, Box 1 will be material related to the first edition of his book; Box 2 will be material related to the second edition of his book; Box 3 will have material related to his personal collection, his business dealings, coin envelopes, and pictures; Box 4 will have material related to various numismatic topics during his career as well as the start of folders of personal correspondence; Box 5 will consist entirely of folders of personal correspondence ( which I have separated into folders for many people by name who have lots of correspondence, and a folder of miscellaneous collectors as well); Box 6 will be material related to his publishing's in Penny-Wise as well as material related to Walter Breen; and Box 7 will be auction catalogs, price lists, etc. Each box will be supplied with a basic breakdown as well so hopefully in the future others can easily access the information 2) are there any other half cents that Roger owned that you now own that you do not have the envelopes for? If so, I will be happy to try and find them. Just let me know if there are any you are interested in. 3) my exhibit on Roger for EAC is coming along very nicely. If it is acceptable to you, I would like to use five pieces from the collection in the exhibit. All the half cent guys would enjoy it, and many other EACers also. I have two suggestions: 1) I bought from Debbie after Roger’s death all of his half cent files and papers. It is in several large boxes. You would be welcome to go through them if you think you need anything else. This could be either for your exhibit or just for your personal interest. Mike Spurlock spent two days going through this material for his magnum opus on the pedigrees of important half cents. 2) You may want to talk to Mike Packard, who was very close to Roger for many years and who may have some additional suggestions for your exhibit. I’m glad you obtained several of the auction coins, and nobody gets everything they want at an auction. We are going to game #6 tonight, and will do our best to bring the Cardinals a winner. I tried really hard to be there, but it just wouldn't work out with my work schedule. My results from The Whister and Davy sales were mixed. I bid on II coins. On 6 coins I was the underbidder, each time being outbid by Chris McCawley. Three coins I wasn't competitive on, and two of your coins I won. Both are die states of 1808/7 C2. I then purchased from CVM two coins that I was outbid on, a third 1808 C2 die state and an 1808 C3 from Bob's collection that was an upgrade, the 1808 C2 is the only variety that I have decided to collect die states. I lost out on the state 2 from your collection, but now have all of the others except state 7, which looks like it will be very hard to obtain! I talked with Tom Reynolds, Doug Bird, and Steve Ellsworth at the show this week and they all said that you were there on Thursday.Sorry I missed you. I didn't add anything to my collection. The main purpose of writing is to ask your opinion on an exhibit that i am thinking about doing at EAC in the spring. It pertains to Roger Cohen, since he has a special connection to me. It would revolve around events in Roger's Half Cent collecting career. I noticed that it was the 59-year anniversary of his first coin sale that he mentioned in the preface of his book, the 40 year anniversary of publishing "Little Half Sisters" in December 1971, the 40th anniversary of his 10/1972 FPL (which you sent a copy to me), the 30th anniversary of his second edition (January 1982), and the 20th anniversary of the auction of his collection (February 1992. I thought I would present the literature associated with each (I have the auction catalog from the New Netherlands Coin Company from 1953, a copy of the FPL that you sent me, that with your permission I would put in the exhibit, as well as both books and the auction catalog). I would personalize this by mentioning my connection, showing an aerial map of where we lived, and also include the 4-5 half cents I own that are pedigreed to Roger. I would like your thoughts on this idea, as well as any suggestions or ideas that you have that would improve this or that I do no know of. Let me know. Best wishes and Go Cards! I think I know who each of the major players are, but I would appreciate your input/confirmation on any that you can tell. 2) There are two large cigar boxes of coin envelopes in the boxes. It would appear to me that there are both of Bill Weber's envelopes for the 1794 C5b and 1794 C6b that he traded with Roger, and that I think you bought at his auction. If this is the case and you feel that you want the envelopes, I would think all of the half cent community would be thrilled if the coins and the envelopes were reunited! He is working on an exhibit for EAC dealing with Roger Cohen. As a child Bob lived on the same street as Roger in Baltimore and played with Roger's children, I believe. As part of his research he has been going through and organizing the large amount of Roger's papers which I bought from Roger's widow, Debby, after Roger's death, and which I gave to EPNNES.
