Also referred to as natural healing or holistic medicine. Instead of just managing symptoms, treatment focuses on finding the root cause of a problem and helping the body restore its self-healing ability. The goal is to obtain optimal health in mind, body, and spirit. “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Thomas A. The reasons for seeking a solution are varied and may include one who has developed adverse health consequences, or hoping to avoid further problems. In either case, you are no doubt ready for some real answers and you want worthwhile information that will help in the battle against nicotine addiction. There are no quick fixes, but IF you are concerned about your overall health, and the health of those around you, then making a choice to quit smoking puts you on the right track. Smoking IS an addiction. Nicotine in tobacco is considered to be one of the fiercest and most complex addictors of all. Tobacco artificially alters the brain’s chemistry. In fact, nicotine is so deadly that it far exceeds heroin and cocaine addiction. The purpose of this book is to offer helpful alternative solutions to fighting this addiction. We offer you methodologies to eliminate the addiction, but the final ingredient is YOU and your desire to quit smoking forever! We wish you all the best of success with your journey! 4 Chapter 1 The Hook (why people smoke) There are 3 main reasons why people smoke:  1 - Peer pressure and media influences  2 - Bio-chemical imbalances in the body  3 - Nicotine addiction 1- Peer Pressure and Media Influences Before World War I, tobacco was smoked mainly in the form of cigars and primarily by the wealthy. Cigarettes, which were basically leftovers of the cigar making process, were smoked by the less fortunate. The number of people who smoked cigarettes boomed when tobacco companies started to mass-produce cigarettes. Their clientele: soldiers of World War I. This marketing broadened of course after the war. Peer pressure can have a significant effect on you. If you are surrounded by people who smoke, like family and friends, you can 5 soon develop the habit of smoking. An environment permissive and indifferent towards cigarette smoking will produce significant numbers of smokers. The media can have a huge effect. On the following pages we show you some amazing ads we were able to find in our research. These ads are from JAMA – The Journal of the American Medical Association. So what influence do you think it would have on someone if your own doctor smoked and believed it was OK to use cigarettes?! It is my understanding that the AMA did not take a position against smoking until the 1980s even though there was plenty of evidence that smoking was dangerous to your health and could cause cancer among other diseases. The first ad below is promoting Camel cigarettes. Wow! Not only are you being patriotic by using them, but a military doctor is pictured. The second ad is showing how much less irritating the Philip Morris cigarettes are compared to other “mystery” cigarettes. The third ad is telling you how much more smoking pleasure you will get with Chesterfield. 6 Camel Ad – JAMA – Dec 30, 1944 7 Philip Morris Ad – JAMA – Jan 6, 1945 8 Chesterfield Ad – JAMA – 1945 9 Smoking has been very prevalent in the movies and especially in the 1950s and 1960s, on television. Even the actors were advertising various brands in commercials during a TV show. Do you recall the “Marlboro Man” (rugged-looking cowboy)? There were actually several men who modeled for print and TV ads. At least two of them have died of lung cancer from smoking. Fortunately, we have come a long way and have more knowledge about the health hazards. As time moved along, more and more restrictions were placed on cigarette advertising. For years the tobacco companies lied to us about the dangers of smoking. But now the truth is out! 10
