But there are certain rules which, if closely observed, will serve to show the probable weather, although a change of wind may altogether disturb even the closest calcu- lation. From observations taken with great nicety, for many years it has been proved that at- New Moon changes have been 68 Settled weather 42 Full „ „ 63 „ „ 37 First and last Qr. „ 63 37 At Perigee „ „ . 72 28 At Apogee 64 36 New Moon at Perigee „ 80 20 „ at Apogee „ 64 36 Full Moon „ „ 68 32 „ t„ at Perigee „ 81 19 The scale is.so many out of every hundred. A rapid rise of tie barometer pAresdictsu unfdsettalwedd lwealeiat htenner ha; a ssloww triseei ithsorne cl ofdnytfratry o e ; aln sbltea doayy sbwa r otmeotfeer, rrdom m when continued with dryness, very fine weather. A rapid and consider- able fall indicates storms ; alternate rising and sinking, unsettled weather. S.E. or S., or S.W. The causes which affect the barometer are-1. The direction of the winds. 2. The amount of vapour, moisture, or strength of wind. A barometer begins to rise considerably before the conclusion of a gale, but sinks very low before high winds or heavy rain. It falls (not always) before thunder. Instances of fine weather with a low glass occur, but not often. A long movement of the barometer either up or down, predicts a corresponding continuance of fine weather or otherwise. Dew is more frequently than otherwise an indication of fine weather-so is fog. Neither of these occur under an overcast sky, or when there is much wind. Fog is never formed while there is a strong breeze. Remarkable clearness of atmosphere, and distant hills appearing nearer than usual are indica- tions of rain. An unusual twinkling of the stars, and haloes round the moon, are also pretty sure signs of change. But in every case the dryness or dampness of the air and its temperature must always be considered, together with locality ; and in most cases nothing but observations regis- tered during a long period can be relied on, as the mountain, the plain, the thickly or sparsely wooded country, or the coast line or swampy dis- trict, may each contribute their quota of atmospheric influence to pro- duce a corresponding change. In summer, rain in Sydney is almost sure to reach Queensland. Calculations for 1877 show results as follows:-January, beginning of month fair, with showers and gusty wind towards the close. February changeable throughout. March, much rain during second and third weeks, fair towards the close. April, showery, with heavier rain in the second and third weeks. May, wet during the first part of the month, fair and mild afterwards, with frost and fine weather at the close. June will probably be fine throughout, with occasional frost. July may be ushered in with cold wind and gusty showers, but will most probably terminate with fair weather and heavy frost. August is likely to be a changeable and showery month, with little frost. September generally dry and fine. October, rainy during second or third week, but probably will be on the whole a fine month. November, rain and change with few intervals of fine weather. December may be ushered in with wind and rain, ending with fine weather,- probably indicative of drought during the summer months. New Moons in Apogee-January and February ; in Peri- gee-June, July, August, and September. Full Moons in Apogee-June, July, August ; in Perigee-February and March.
