The International ConferencePublicSphereReconsidered,organizedinMay19and20bytheFaculty of Arts and Letters from University of Beira Interior, Citizens Agenda Project and CommunicationandDeliberationProject,withthesupportfromCommunicationand Democracy Section of European Communication Research and Education Associa- tion(ECREA)andthePoliticalCommunicationandRhetoricWorkingGroupsfrom SOPCOM, tried to answer some recurring issues in this debate. At a time when the decision- making power is transferred from national bodies elected directly by citizens to transnational instances, what does mean to search for a European Public Sphere? • h) In face of the fragmentation of contemporary societies, with multiplica- tionofclaimsforrecognitionpresentedbymultifariousidentities,maywestill speakaboutanunitarianconceptofpublicsphere? In addition to the focus provided by Communication Sciences, the event had a trans-disciplinarynaturewithcontributionsfromPhilosophy,PoliticalScience,Mass CommunicationResearch,andPoliticalSociology. Wehopethattheproceedingsoftheconferencenowpublishedwillcontributeto abetterunderstandingofthesedifficulttimesinwhichthedemocraticdebateismore thanever,astrongdemand.
