Many traditional paths to influenceweremadedifficultifnotimpossibleformostwomentoaccess.However, thisdoesnotmeanthatwomenwerenotpoliticallyandpracticallyinfluentialintheir communitiesinsignificantways. Oneparticularlyimportantvehicleforwomenseekingtomakeapublicdifference wastheformationofclubs,associations,andothervoluntarilyformedsocialorgani- zations.Navigatingwithinhistoricalconstraints,“womenusedclubsasameansof adaptationtotherolesocietyhadsetforthem”(Martin1987,p.30).Theseclubswere awayforwomentogettogether,educatethemselves,andfigureouthowtobetter theircommunities.Overtime,thesewomen’sclubsbecameconstructivesegments ofsocietyandanopportunityforwomentogainalegitimatevoiceandtoinfluence theircommunities.
