David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA Pediatric Pain Program, Department of Pediatrics, #22-464 MDCC, UCLA School of Medicine, 10833 Le Conte Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1752, USA Foreword The past twenty-five years have seen a remarkable increase in research and education in the psychosocial aspects of cancer, including the founding of a sub-specialty – psycho-oncology. Most of this work has addressed adult psychosocial care. However, only patchy attention has been given to the problems of children and their families. And, surely, it has been far less than appropriate,giventheemotionalpainthataccompanieslife-threateningillness in children. It is a great contribution, therefore, that the editors of this book have undertaken to collect our current knowledge and research in pediatric psychosocial oncology and publish a cohesive and comprehensive textbook that addresses these issues in the care of children with cancer. They have drawn upon an international group of experts who have summarized the current information on a range of critically important topics. Co-editorship by a pediatric oncologist and a psycho-oncologist is an added strength, which follows the principle of full integration of psychological care into medical care. The book will benefit both the primary oncology team members and psycho-oncologists and mental health professionals working in pediatriccancer.Greaterattentionneedstobegiventothisarea, andthiswork will raise awareness of the issues for public and professional audiences. It is a publicationtoinformstakeholderslikeparents, familiesandadvocacygroups, thereby creating a stronger case for expanded psychosocial resources in healthcare policy decisions. As a grandparent who has recentlylost a lovely,three-year-oldgrandson to cancer (to whom the editors have kindly dedicated this work), I can attest to theimportanceofthisbookfromdualviewpoints:professionally, asfounderof the International Psycho-oncology Society, and personally, as a grieving grandmother. I commend the editors for this global view of children’s emotional needs and guidelines for their management in the context of life- threatening illness. The contributors to this volume have elucidated the goal that, overtime, nochild’sdistressrelatedtoillnessshouldgounrecognizedand untreated. Jimmie C.
