First and foremost, I would like to thank Franco Bertozzi, my husband
and life companion, and supporter of all of my undertakings. I am in his
debt for this book, above all for his frequent metaphors about the sea,
sailing, and anchors, as well as for his passion for anthropology, and
for imparting to me that intelligent and curious attitude of his towards
those he encounters in his travels.
I also wish to thank Anna Massi, with whom I share a passion for the
teaching of psychotherapy at the PerFormat school, for reading what I
have written and for expressing her learned opinion of it.
I recall with fondness and esteem my colleagues of the Rome super-

Thanks also go to Michele Novellino, my mentor for over twenty
