Consonants are consistent with this system, but I use only one diacritic to distinguish pronun- ciation in Persian. I mark the long vowel aleph with the diacritic ā (similar to the English a in all) as contrasted with a, the short vowel, which is very close to the English a in ask. The short vowels are rendered with the closest English equivalent to the way they are spoken in standard contemporary Iranian Per- sian; thus I use e (e.g., ejtemā’i, or hejāb) and o (e.g., gol) rather than i and u. I use i for long ی (e.g., pezeshki) rhyming with English me, and u for long و (e.g., sukhteh) rhyming with English soon. I double letters to indicate tashdid (e.g., takhassos). The silent final h is written and indicated by eh (e.g., khātereh); and ‘ayn and hamza are indicated by ’. I write the ezafeh as -e after consonants (e.g., nasl-e) and as -ye after vowels and silent final h (e.g., daheh-ye). Similarly, I add the plural hā to singular words as in daheh-ye shasti-hā. All dates are AD (Anno Domini) except those in Persian-language references, which follow the format Anno Persico–Anno Domini. “Anno Persico” refers to the Iranian solar Hejri calendar. The year 1981 AD, for instance, equals 1360 AP. All date formats are day/month/year.
