WILLIAM BLAKE PREFACE IN this book I have gathered together a number of essayswhich have been published in various places during the last dozen years or so. They have two things in common: they are concerned en tirely with various aspects of English socialand economichistory, and they are devoted towhat mightbecalledthe ProvincesofEng land. Hence the title of the book. Some of these essayswere pub lished in places difficultof accessfor interested readers, and some are nowdifficultto obtain atall.Two essayshavenot hithertobeen published. Of these, that on 'The Highland Zone in Domesday Book'waswrittenespeciallyfor this book.Theother, on 'The Re discovery of England' was first given as three talks in the Third Programme ofthe British Broadcasting Corporation, and I am in debted to the Corporation for permission to publish them here, slightly amendedinstylebutnotinsubstance. For permission to publish the essays which have already ap pearedinprintelsewhere I amgrateful tovarious editors and pub lishers: to the Wool Education Society for 'Sheep Farming in Saxon and Medieval England', originally published asa pamphlet in 1955;to the Councilofthe RoyalHistorical Societyfor 'English Provincial Towns in the Early Sixteenth Century', originallypub lished in the Transactions of the Society for 1956; to Longmans, Green & Co. Tothe editorofAgriculturalHistory I amobligedfor permission to reprint'TheLeicestershireFarmerinthe SeventeenthCentury', which firstappearedinthatjournalin 1951. Four ofthe essaysoriginally appeared in the Transactionsofthe Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society. These were 'Croft Hill' (1950), 'The Origin and Rise of Market Harborough' (1949),'SevenDesertedVillageSitesinLeicestershire' (1956),and 'The Population of an English Village, 1086-1801' (1957).
