HABsaremostcommonincoastalmarineecosystems,buttheymayalsoaffecttheopenocean as well as brackish or freshwater ecosystems. Most HAB phenomena are caused by blooms of microscopicalgaeorphytoplankton,includingcertaincyanobacteria(blue-greenalgae),although the term also applies to harmful blooms of macroalgae (seaweeds).
