INTRODUCTION With67 currently described species, Pwgomphus is the mostspeciose genus of the NewWorld Gomphidae, although only two species were described in thepast 15years fromMexico, viz. P. belyshevi BELLE, 1991 andP. amarillus TENNESSEN, 1992.Whileconducting a briefodonatebiodiversity survey in theStateof Michoacan, Mexico, I cameacross asmallspecies ofanewPwgom- phus, bringing the numberof thecurrently known species to68 (BELLE, 1991, 1994;TENNESSEN, 1992;DAIGLE, 1996),ofwhich 10are nowknown from Mexico(GONZALEZ-SORIANO& NOVELO-GUTIERREZ, 1996).Thenew species is similarto P.pygmaeusSelys andP. delicatusBelle. REMARKS. — Progomphus marcelaemales were captured at ashallow rocky stream, around 1400honasunny day. They wereperching onsmallrockswhere thewaterflowisrapid. Noaggressiveinteractionswereobservedandthreeorfour individualswere seenperching on the samerock at the sametime. The stream runs intoa wide, smallcanyon. Apparently the flying seasonis restrictedto the lateautumn;no individualswere seen during occasional collectings from 1998 to 2004, nor during systematic collectings from February 2005 toJanuary 2006, excepting November2005. DISCUSSION Progomphus marcelaebelongs tothepygmaeus-delicatus groupbystature,tho- racic colourpattern, andby wingvenation.By thewidthandshape oftheante- humeralpale stripes, and theextentofpale colouron sidesofthorax(cf. WIL- LIAMSON, 1920, pi. 1, fig. 2) it resembles closely P. pygmaeusratherthan P. delicatus. In P. delicatus the antehumeralstripes are more wedge-shaped, and metepimera are mostly obscure (cf. BELLE, 1973, fig. 130). P. marcelaecanbe easilydifferentiatedfromP.pygmaeusbytheshape oftheaccessory genitalia:the apical excision ofanteriorhamulusis transverse andshortin P. marcelae(Figs 4a-c), whileinP.pygmaeusitislongitudinal anddeeper (Figs 4d-f).Thebasalin- ternalmarginoftheposteriorhamulusislargerinP.marcelae(Fig. 4a).Likewise, ofthethreespecies, P.marcelaeexhibitsmorereducedepiproctallobes(Fig.6a), whoseapicointernal branchesare clearly more developed inP. delicatus(Fig. 8) and P.pygmaeus(Fig. 7). Differencesmentionedby BELLE (1973) forP. delica- tusandP.pygameusmalesapply also to P. delicatusand P.marcelaemales.
