Embracing Tomorrow. TV he fall issue of Profile is dedicated to our many supporters among our alumni, students, faculty, staff, and other college friends. Appropriately so! You are the people that play such a huge role in giving back to Lenoir-Rhyne in a way that allows us to achieve the excellence that has long been our heritage. You will find in these pages a list of our donors, a list that includes 30 percent of our alumni and 97 percent of our faculty. Both num- bers are ones of which we should all be proud. The alumni giving rate of 30 percent is up from 8 percent 10 years ago, and it places Lenoir-Rhyne in a class with the truly distinguished liberal arts colleges in the country. But more than that, it signifies the commitment you have to ensuring that the College will continue to provide the best possible learning experience in educating the next generation of leaders. These are tough economic times, especially in this region of North Carolina. Most colleges are experiencing a decline in financial support from alumni and commu- nity leaders. Lenoir-Rhyne, however, is continuing to receive the critical support necessary to improve its facilities. The first phase of the campaign to fund the conversion of Mauney and Schaeffer Halls into academic buildings is nearing completion. On Nov. 1, a one-year renovation project begins on these buildings, with the end result being state-of-the-art conference facilities, a career center, offices and classrooms for three academic schools, space for outreach programs to the community, and computer laboratories. The entire community is looking forward to the unveiling of the new facility at Homecoming 2004. We are especially excited about our enrollment this fall. The total enrollment reached 1550, up from 1486 last year. The incoming class of freshmen and transfers is a record size, and our retention rate rose to a 10-year high. Our students and faculty continue to work together in the classroom, in the laboratories, on community service projects, and in addressing the problems & of tomorrow. It is not surprising that "U.S. News World Report" once again ranked us number one in North Carolina in our Carnegie classification. We have a busy year ahead of us, and we hope you will join with us as we work to implement our goals of excellence. A Master Land Plan is under develop- ment and will outline the plans for our campus' physical structure over the next decade. We have a task force working to design new marketing projects for the College. Our evening and graduate programs are undergoing review so that they can provide maximum benefits to this community. But, most exciting of all will be the continued successes of our students as they grow and mature in their personal and spiritual lives. That is the highlight of every year at Lenoir-Rhyne. I thank all of you who help make this possible. Sincerely, Wayne B.
