Thanking you, Sincerely yours (ProfessorMaula Bakhsh) (Department of Urdu, Aligarh Muslim University, SSttaatteemmeenntt ooff TTeeaacchhiinngg aanndd RReesseeaarrcchh IInntteerreessttss Being a teacher, I have felt all the time that literature as a discipline, in the form of prose or poetry has a great need of a new Linguistic Universe. A reader, who may be interested in prose or poetry, does not mean that he is against any one or he can not understand these modes of expressions which is not the object of his study, but it means that he likes a peculiar style or mode of communication because the way of literary communication in prose and poetry is different in nature. If I am asked about my interest in a peculiar form of literature, my soul goes out for prose, not poetry, because prose is less explained than poetry. That is why, my research area, is prose-criticism. I am working on ‘classical Prose: Discourse and Style, a book likely to come out soon. Beside it I am submitting a major project on “A Formalistic and structural analysis of urdu prose form, in the perspective of culture. We know that forms of prose are taught in our universities. I am also teaching the same text, but there is no book on this subject in Urdu. No doubt some works have been done on prose style by some scholars but they have not underlined the Structural and Cultural difference of prose and poetic style. Rather they have applied the rule of poetry’s criticism on the prose text. So my research interest lies in the prose field. I felt no work has been done on formalistic and structural analysis of prose forms, particularly in the perspective of culture. In this study, I am interested to investigate the nature and power of prose, elements of good prose, difference and similarly between prose and poetic structure as well as forms of both the discipline. Why I am interested in this study? because when we look out for the difference between long short-story and novelette or difference between novel and novelette. One can feel difficulty in putting the answer. No book in urdu literature deals with these problems. As for example, when a reader reads “Ghubar-e-Khatir” byMaulana Azad, considering it as s combination of letters then he gets confused, because our critics regard it as light essays, short-story and dramatic monologue, at a time. Similarly “Bagh-o-Bahar” by Meer Amman is a Dastaan (legend) and a bridge between novel and Dastan, raises many question in reader’s mind. These all questions are linked with the nature of form and structure of prose. I am thinking about, why Shelley does not equate poetry with verse? For him, Plato and Bacon are poets, why? Why it is said that the poet does enjoy a greater amount of freedom than writer of prose? Why poet is not bound to keep himself under the boundary of grammar and writer of prose is bound. (see: poetic and non-poetic discourse by R.S. Pathank, Bahri Publication, New Delhi, (1998) p: 67) Beside it, why a prose-writer should be communicator and poet should not be, but he should explore, consolidate and form the total experience that is poem. Why Phillimore remarks like that: Poetry is a wind that blowth where it listeth: a barbaric people may have great poetry, they can not have great prose. Prose is an institution, part of the equipment of Civilization, Part of its heritable wealth, like its laws or its system of schooling, or its tradition of skilled craft man ship. (See: J.S Phillimore, Doblin review, cl xxx (1913) p:8) Is it right that as Vosseler says that poetry and prose are not two kinds of language but two species of style (see: the sprit of language in civilization. Tro Oscar, London (1932) p:199) My interest of research is to analyse the above mentioned views about the prose and poetry. Is it true that Bacon is a poet as Shelley has declared? This statement proves that Shelley is defender of poetry not the analyser of the nature of prose and poetry. He wants to say that except poetry nothing is art. We know that, because poetic syntax is different from prose-syntax. That is why, prose writer has to maintain the norm of the language and they have to construct a new style within the frame-work of grammar. In fact, prose in any society is the product of new age, modern sensibility. My study and investigation is in this respect is continued. This is very very fascinating area which is the subject of my research. Teaching is process of learning. We can not teach any body only we can learn. For a teacher, research is indispensable because, time to time the concept of any object or theory of reading and the method of analyzing the text is being changed. As a teacher, I have also felt that the meaning of ay particular text and the method of teaching adopted by me is not enough for another year with another group of students. Therefore, I observed that, I will have to keep myself in the stream of the process of research. Actually my soul goes out for teaching which pushes me to know and deal with the current world of knowledge. Professor.
