In the fi rst tradition, the growing : 0 0 literature on metaphors has helped to guide thinking, providing insights into at such phenomena as the study of organizations. In the second, there has been o] an increased interest in professions, from lawyers and university academics g e to doctors and social workers. i D This edited collection brings together these two traditions for the fi rst time, n providing a unique and systematic overview, at macro and micro level, of the a S use of metaphors in the sociology of professions. A range of professional , a fi elds are explored, from law and medicine to social work and teaching, i n r showing how metaphors can enhance our understanding of the operation of o f professional groups. i l a By demonstrating how metaphors can add to our understanding of profes- C f sions in society, as well as in professional practice, this ground-breaking o y book makes an invaluable contribution to advanced students and researchers it in fi elds such as the sociology of professions and work and organization – as s r e well as informing professionals and policy makers themselves. v i n U Andreas Liljegren is Associate Professor in Social Work in the Department [ y of Social Work at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. b d e Mike Saks is Research Professor in Health Policy at University Campus d oa Suffolk, UK, and holds Visiting Chairs at the University of Lincoln, UK, the l n Royal Veterinary College, University of London, UK, and the University of w o Toronto, Canada. D Routledge Studies in Management, Organizations and Society 7 1 0 2 h c r a M 3 This series presents innovative work grounded in new realities, addressing 1 4 issues crucial to an understanding of the contemporary world. This is the world 0 of organized societies, where boundaries between formal and informal, public : 0 0 and private, local and global organizations have been displaced or have van- at ished, along with other nineteenth century dichotomies and oppositions. Man- o] agement, apart from becoming a specialized profession for a growing number g e of people, is an everyday activity for most members of modern societies. i D Similarly, at the level of enquiry, culture and technology, and literature and n economics, can no longer be conceived as isolated intellectual fi elds; conven- a S tional canons and established mainstreams are contested. Management, a, Organizations and Society addresses these contemporary dynamics of trans- i n r formation in a manner that transcends disciplinary boundaries, with books o f that will appeal to researchers, student and practitioners alike. i l a C Recent titles in this series include: f o y Untold Stories in Organizations t i rs Edited by Michal Izak, Linda Hitchin, and David Anderson e v i n Gender Equality in Public Services U [ Chasing the dream y b Hazel Conley and Margaret Page d e d Sexual Orientation at Work a o l Contemporary issues and perspectives n w Edited by Fiona Colgan and Nick Rumens o D Organizations and the Media Organizing in a mediatized world Edited by Josef Pallas, Lars Strannegård and Stefan Jonsson Management and Neoliberalism Connecting policies and practices Alexander Styhre Professions and Metaphors Understanding professions in society 7 1 Edited by Andreas Liljegren 0 2 h and Mike Saks c r a M 3 1 4 0 : 0 0 t a ] o g e i D n a S a, i n r o f i l a C f o y t i s r e v i n U [ y b d e d a o l n w o D First published 2017 by Routledge 2 Park Square, Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon OX14 4RN and by Routledge 711 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017 Routledge is an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, an informa business 7 1 © 2017 selection and editorial material, Andreas Liljegren and Mike 0 Saks; individual chapters, the contributors 2 h The right of the editor to be identifi ed as the author of the editorial c r material, and of the authors for their individual chapters, has been a M asserted in accordance with sections 77 and 78 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. 3 1 All rights reserved.
