Programme of UGC, SAP-II on “Thrust Areas: Standardization, Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology

of Unani Drugs” from 2011 to 2016 as Coordinator.

Significantly contributed in the following important areas:
 Pharmacovigilance: Worked in the field of Pharmacovigilance in which he
emphasized the rationality in the use of Unani Drugs for the prevention of
ADRs in co-relation with the theory of Temperament. Given the concept of
importance of Pharmacovigilance in Unani System of Medicine and also
explained the relation of Pharmacoenvironmentalogy and Unani Medicine.
 Pharmacology: Determined various pharmacological activities of herbal drugs
like ‘Habb-e-qilqil’ (Cardiospermum helicacabum L.), ‘Berg-e-Arusa’
(Adhatoda vasica L.) and ‘Shoneez’ (Nigella sativa L.) for their
hypoglycaemic activities. Effects on sexual behaviour of rats of Syzygium
aromaticum L., and Myristica fragrans Houtt. (nutmeg). Searched for the
anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic study of Unani Eye drop formulation.
Also screened various traditional herbs for
various pharmacological activities.
 Latif-Sukul Syndrome (Iris heterochromic vitiligo-A syndrome):

This is the first discerned case of its kind in the Asia,
Latif-Sukul Syndrome
reported by Dr. Abdul Latif and coined by him. It is a
rare Autosomal dominant congenital disease. This
syndrome indicates that vitiligo or such pigmentary
disease may be hereditary and genetic in nature and not
to say acquired only. It is also presented in IX Biennial
Conference of Dermatology, Lahore (Pakistan) in 1997.

 Melanonychia (Nail Pigmentation):
This is the first case reported as a rare unwanted
effect of Atrilal (Ammi majos Linn.) In reference
to the treatment of Vitiligo reported by Prof.
Abdul Latif.
 Standardization of Unani Drugs: Worked very efficaciously in this field,
along with the single and Compound Unani formulations. He is continuously
engaged in various clinical trial of natural drugs used in various diseases like
conjunctivitis, cholasma/melasma, diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma,
psoriasis. Along with this he has written various valuable articles that is
published in various journals regarding the status of Unani Medicine and a
give a detailed description about Nabeez.
 Microbiology: Exploring herbal drugs for their antimicrobial activity, he has
screened the antimicrobial property of Unani drugs against MRSA and other
microbial strains such as Swertia chirayita, Coptis teeta, Viola odorata,
Achyranthes aspera, Abutilon indicum, Laooq Sapistan Khayar Shambari,
Glycyrrhiza glabra, Nepeta bracteata, Cassia fistula, Adiantum capillus
veneris, Usnea Longissima Lichen and more. Along with this he has also
screened certain chemical compounds for their antimicrobial property.

 Designed an instrument for treatment of skin diseases:
UV Lamp comprising of UV-C light for the treatment of
vitiligo and Psoriasis. In India it is first time made with
cheaper & handy device. Female patients can use herself
on hidden portion of her affected parts in the treatment
of Vitiligo & Psoriasis specially.
 Instrument for the preparation of Nabeez [Fermented Dosage Forms]
Fig.3 Nabeez is a special dosage form of medicinal And / or nutritional
liquid preparation obtained by the fermentation of sweet aqueous solution of
various food grains, fruits and medicinal ingredients. It is considered as one
of the important form of compound drugs formulation in the earlier era of

Unani medicine. Nowadays with the advancement of Industrial technology,
the earthen pots have been replaced by larger wooden barrels/large metallic
and plastic pots or stainless steel vessel taken for its manufacturing guided
and designed as part of MD Thesis supervised.
