The Proceedings were published already in 196 7 under the tide “Le Origini dello Gnosticismo”. As is evident from the name of the publication the conference was concerned exclusively with the origins of Gnosti cism. It was an idea not far away to follow up the extremely interesting Messina conference by another colloquium on Gnosticism, even if it had to be arranged on a much more modest scale. Accordingly an International Colloquium, sponsored by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History, and Antiquities, was organi zed August 20—25 1973, in the house of the Academy in Stockholm. The papers presented are now published after some delay, caused on the one hand by the wish to have as many papers published as possible, on the other hand by the inevitably slow arrangements for publication in one of the Academy’s series. The Organizing Committee wishes to thank the former President of the Acade my Prof. Strdmback for his acdve interest and support, and also Mr. Hogner, at that dme Director of Administration, for help in various ways. The Committee is further much obliged to the Secretaries for their assistance, and among them Mr. Hellholm should be mentioned with special gradtude. That Prof. Jonas was willing to accept the post as Honorary President of the Colloquium was a source of great satisfaction. The participants were free to choose their subjects within the wide field of Gnosticism. It was but natural that a certain emphasis happened to be placed on the Copdc texts from Nag Hammadi. In that way, however, the Syrian-Egyptian type (to use the terminology introduced by Jonas) was dominadng at the cost of the Iranian type. To some extent Prof. Hartman’s paper “Iranian Influences in post-exilic Judaism” was intended to compensate for this lack of balance. That paper, however, is not published here since its content is largely identic with an other contribudon published by Prof. Hartman in the interval.
