Printed in Singapore by Uto-Print FOREWORD The Theoretical Physics Institute hosted a Symposium and Workshop "Continuous Advances in QCD 2002/Arkadyfest," to honor the 60th birth- day of Arkady Vainshtein from Friday, May 17 through Thursday, May 23, 2002. This event was an occasion to exchange the latest ideas in QCD and gauge theories at strong coupling at large. We also looked back on the his- tory of the subjects in which Arkady played such a central role: applications of PCAC, penguins, invisible axions, QCD sum rules, exact beta functions, condensates in supersymmetry, powerful heavy quark expansions, and new anomalies in 2D SUSY theories. The current status of these subjects was summarized in several excellent presentations that also outlined a historical perspective. The Symposium (May 17-18) consisted exclusively of review talks pre- senting the big picture regarding QCD and related areas, with an emphasis on topics in which Arkady's contributions are most plentiful. The format of the Workshop (May 20-23) was chosen to create a stimulating atmo- sphere for breakthrough discussions and collaborations. The morning ses- sions consisted of two review talks presenting the most promising research topics of today. The afternoon sessions were reserved for shorter original presentations and discussions. The cosmological constant problem in extra- dimension theories, supersymmetric monopoles, solitons and confinement, AdS/CFT correspondence, and high density QCD were just a few of the hot topics at the focus of discussions. Many of you may know that the creation of the Theoretical Physics Institute during the 1980s is directly connected to the life-long interest in the physical sciences of Bill Fine. We are all deeply saddened by his recent death which ocurred on May, 18, 2002 during the symposium. Without his gracious financial donation the Institute would not have become a reality. His generosity is never far from our minds and it is with forethought that we have chosen to honor Mr. Fine by officially changing our name. As of January 9, 2002, we are known as the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute. The organizers would like to take this opportunity to thank Sally Mene- fee and Catharine Grahm for their dedicated work on numerous aspects of organization before, during, and after the workshop.
