As the two fundamental processes of annealing, grain growth and recrystallization have been studied, modeled, and debated for the better part of a century. In 2001, two long-standing conferences, the International Conference on Grain Growth in Poly crystalline Materials and the International Recrystallization Conference, merged in the First International Conference on Grain Growth and Recrystallization held in Aachen, Germany. Subsequent ReX&GG installments took place in 2004 (Annecy, France), 2007 (Jeju, Korea), 2010 (Sheffield, UK), and 2013 (Sydney, Australia). At this sixth conference in the series, over 300 scientists gathered from 30 countries to present and discuss the latest research in these fundamental material processes. It seems safe to predict that grain growth and recrystallization will continue to engage scientists for at least another century. Topics addressed by sessions at this conference included: Grain growth theory and simulation; Abnormal grain growth; Grain growth in nanocrystalline materials; Recrystallization modeling and simulation; Dynamic recrystallization; Grain boundary structure and properties; Twinning; Advanced characterization; Deformation, substructure, and texture; Iron and low carbon steels; Electrical steels; Stainless steels; HSLA and microalloyed steels; TRIP and TWIP steels; Specialty steels; Aluminum alloys; Superalloys; Titanium alloys; Magnesium alloys; and Unconventional materials including ceramics, ice, and refractories. In addition, plenary sessions highlighted new perspectives on recrystallization and grain growth, and participants were privileged to attend a lecture by Dr. Dorte Juul Jensen, as she was awarded the Cyril Stanley Smith Award. An evening poster session, social events, and a conference banquet rounded out the activities. The 45 papers presented in these proceedings are divided into nine sections: • Grain growth theory and simulation • Recrystallization theory and simulation • Low carbon and IF steels • High strength steels • Electrical steels • Stainless steels • Aluminum and magnesium alloys • Nickel and nickel based superalloys • Unconventional and advanced materials xi
