Now a day, our animals, that is, domestic, laboratory, zoo, companion, pest and captive animals or managed wild animals, and our life are facing to lots of problems. The one of the most important problems should be sustainability of our society. That’s meaning a sustainability of the Earth. Thus, the main theme of this Congress that we set is ‘Ethology for Sustainable Society’. For this main theme, our viewpoints are not only for welfare of farm animals and its practices but also for consideration of captive animals and wild animals as well as human-animal interactions. Japan has been traditionally ‘rice country’, though we are also keeping 3,860,000 cattle of dairy and beef, 9,540,000 swine and 308,000,000 chickens, approximately. On the other hand, a population of our farmers has been declined rapidly in this decade. Additionally, our agricultural damage from Sika deer, wild boars, Japanese monkeys, and pest birds would be over 20 billion Japanese yen (about US$ 160,000,000) per year. These problems could occur for everywhere in the world. In such situation, we should consider the sustainability of these animals and human as a society from the ethological viewpoint. Hokkaido is the northernmost island in Japan, and old and new. Up to 150 years ago, AINU people had been mainly living this island as hunter-gatherer. Thereafter, rapid development has been occurred, so this island now is the greatest agricultural area in Japan. Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido, having about 2 million populations. She has been famous international city since winter Olympic at 1972. Her summer is cool and dry, but heavy snow in winter. Although Sapporo is now so big city, wild brown bears sometime visit south and west area of this city. Toyohira River, that runs a centre of the city, salmon go back in autumn. If you lucky, you can see. Hokkaido University, is a Congress place, is one of the oldest universities in Japan, established as a Sapporo Agricultural College since 1876. You can see several historic buildings including barns in the campus. Enjoy our Ethology Congress with fruitful discussion and Sapporo life!.
