Preface WhenwestartedplanningtheeditionoftheProceedingsoftheInternationalCongress ofMathematicians2006(ICM2006),weconsideredthepossibilityofpublishingonly an electronic version. However, it is pretty difficult to break traditions, particularly foranactivityliketheICMwithanexistenceofmorethanahundredyears. Thus,we finallydecidedtomimicthemodelthatstartedinBerlin98: topublishboth, aprinted andanelectronicversionoftheProceedings. However, youmaynoticetheinfluence oflivingtheInternetEra,wherelengthoffilesisnotreallyabigissue, bythenumber ofpages,altogetheralmost4400,probablyarecordforthehistoryofICMs. TheseProceedingsconsistofthreevolumes. VolumeIisdividedintofourparts. It also contains information about the organization of the Congress, the committees, sponsorsandothercollaborators. Description:
Since the first ICM was held in Zürich in 1897, it has become the pinnacle of mathematical gatherings. It aims at giving an overview of the current state of different branches of mathematics and its applications as well as an insight into the treatment of special problems of exceptional importance.
