Prizes 1 PRIZES PRIZES TENABLE IN ALL FACULTIES Alumni Association in Malaysia and Singapore Jubilee Prizes The Alumni Association in Malaysia and Singapore had donated a sum for the establishment of two prizes. The prizes are to be awarded annually to the best undergraduate sportsman and sportswoman of the year. Award for Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student In 2002, the Graduate School established an award to give due recognition to research postgraduate students who have submitted a thesis of exceptional quality and have demonstrated outstanding performance in other academic aspects. Students shall be nominated by the relevant Faculty Higher Degrees Committee to be considered for the award. The Award shall be in the form of a certificate and book prize. Hong Kong University Alumni Prizes In 1971, the Hong Kong University Alumni Association donated to the University a sum of $12,000 for the establishment of a number of prizes. The donation was increased to $20,000 in 1981, $25,000 in 1985, $28,000 in 1987 and $32,000 in 1989. In 2006, the Alumni Association agreed to revise the terms for the Prizes such that one prize shall be awarded to students from each of the Faculties (currently there are ten Faculties) with effect from the 2005–06 academic year. Li Ka Shing Prizes In 1990, Dr Li Ka Shing made a generous donation to the University. It was agreed that a part of the investment income earned on the donation be used to establish two prizes, one for a PhD thesis and one for an MPhil thesis, for award annually in and after 1992–93. The number of prizes has increased to two MPhil and four PhD theses every year starting from 2005–06. Lim Peck Siu Prize for the Promotion of Cultural Activities To commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of Simon K.Y. Lee Hall in November 2000, the Hall has established a prize in memory of Mr Lim Peck Siu, maternal grandfather of Dr Max Hui-Bon-Hoa, Warden of Simon K.Y. Lee Hall. The prize of the value of $1,000 shall be awarded to the hallmate who has made the greatest contribution in cultural activities. Lin Guo Kai Award for the Promotion of Sports Activities In 2001, Mr Lam Kin who served as the manager of the Simon K.Y. Lee Hall from September 1994 to December 2000, donated a prize in honour of his father, Mr Lin Guo Kai, to be awarded annually with effect from the academic year 2001–02, to a hallmate in the Simon K.Y. Lee Hall who has made the greatest contribution to the promotion of sports activities for the year concerned. CALENDAR 2 Dr Max Hui-Bon-Hoa Prize for the Promotion of Internationalization in Hall In September 2006, the Warden of Simon K.Y. Lee Hall, Dr Max Hui-Bon-Hoa, offered to donate an annual sum of $1,000 for the establishment of a Dr Max Hui-Bon-Hoa Prize for the Promotion of Internationalization in Hall at the University for award to a student-resident at the Simon K.Y. Lee Hall who has contributed significantly to the promotion of internationalization in Hall. The Prize forms part of the Simon K.Y. Lee Hall education prize series (subsequent to the formation of the Lim Peck Siu Prize for the Promotion of Cultural Activities, Lin Guo Kai Award for the Promotion of Sports Activities, Simon K.Y. Lee Prize for Service and C.K. Leung Award for Academic Achievements, and Simon K.Y. Lee Hall Alumni Association Prize for the Most Outstanding Student of the Year) to establish ‘internationalization’ as another core area in Hall education. Peter Whyte Award Peter Whyte Award was established in 2004 in recognition of the inaugural Dean of Students. The award shall be granted with effect from the 2004–05 academic year for an initial period of 10 years to HKU undergraduate students who have contributed most meaningfully to the interaction between the University and the student population. Self Enhancement Cultural Awards In conjunction with the objective of ‘Celebrating Diversity at HKU’, the Self Enhancement Cultural Awards, aiming to encourage students’ pursuit in arts and cultural development, will be presented to students planning to increase their understanding and experience in the arts and culture of other countries through short exchange programmes or overseas visits. With effect from 2003–04, two to four awards of the value of $20,000 each shall be awarded each year to full-time undergraduates in the first or second year of study (or to those in their next-to-final year of study) in any discipline on the basis of academic merit and the quality of the proposal. Simon K.Y. Lee Hall Alumni Association Prize for the Most Outstanding Student of the Year To commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of Simon K.Y. Lee Hall in November 2000, the Hall has established a prize of the value of $1,000 to be awarded to a hallmate who has lead a balanced hall life, that is, someone who has actively participated in hall activities and has performed well in his/her academic work. Simon K.Y. Lee Prize for Service C.K. Leung Awards for Academic Achievements To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Simon K.Y. Lee Hall in 1995, two prizes of the value of $1,000 each were established for award to students in the Hall. In 2000, the terms of agreement for the C.K. Leung Award for Academic Achievements were revised such that two gifts of the value of $500 each shall be awarded to a science or engineering student, and a student in a discipline other than science or engineering. In June 2009, the value of the two awards was increased to $1,000 each. Swire Hall Warden’s Award for the Most All-rounded Student of the Year To mark the 25th Anniversary of Swire Hall in the year 2006, Dr S.X. Zhao, the Warden of Swire Hall, has offered to establish an award for the residents in Swire Hall to give recognition to Swirians for their active participation and excellence in all-rounded performance. The award is in the form of a monetary gift of $2,000 to be donated personally by the Swire Hall Warden or from the Swire Hall Education Fund, together with a certificate. Prizes 3 The Tang Essay Prize In August 2006, Ms Violet Tang offered to donate prizes to the University as an expression of her wish to extend strong support of the University’s continued promotion inter alia of a broad and general education, and to encourage students to enhance their articulation in written English, the principal teaching medium of the University of Hong Kong. Each year a prize of $25,000 will be awarded to one full-time undergraduate student in each of the two Faculties listed in the Schedule. (In addition to these prize awards to the students, a donation of $5,000 will also be made to each of the participating twin- Faculties in a given academic year, towards their purchase of resources such as books.) Zung Fair Foundation Book Prizes Two prizes of $500 each are awarded annually to two second-year undergraduates who have achieved outstanding results in their First Examination, but have been unsuccessful in their candidature for a Hong Kong Association of University Women Scholarship. In 1997, the donor increased the value of the two book prizes to $3,000 each. PRIZES TENABLE IN THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE Building Management Prize In 1978, Mr John H.P. Lok of the John Lok & Partners Ltd. donated an annual sum of $500 to the University for the establishment of a prize to be awarded annually. In 1986, Mr Lok increased the value of the prize to $1,000 and donated a sum of $10,000 for the award of the prize for ten years from 1986– 87. In 1987, Mr Lok donated a silver-plated cup for retention by the Department of Surveying, and ten small cups to be awarded to the recipients of the prize. In 1991, Mr Lok further agreed that the prize be awarded to the best student completing the MSc(ConstProjectMan) degree. In 1997, the donor extended the award for a further ten years with a donation of $20,000. David Wong Memorial Prize In 1978, a group of University of Hong Kong architecture graduates donated a sum of $5,000 to the University for the establishment of a prize in memory of Mr David Wong. Fosroc Prize In 1982, Expandite Limited increased the value of a prize, originally donated in 1965, to $250 to be awarded annually to an undergraduate in architecture. In 1987, the prize was increased to $500 and in 1993, the sum was increased to $1,000 following the establishment of Fosroc Expandite Limited. Gammon Construction Limited Prizes in Building Technology and Civil Engineering Gammon Building Construction Ltd. donated $1,500, $3,500 and $2,000 to the University in 1979, 1981 and 1985 respectively for the establishment of prizes in building technology and civil engineering. In 1990, the Gammon Construction Ltd. extended the prizes for a further period of five years. In 1996, the donor extended the prizes for a further five years with an additional donation of $2,400. The donation was increased to $2,500 in 1997. In 2000, the donor extended the prizes for a further five years from 2000– 01 to 2004–05 with a donation of $2,500. In 2002 and in 2005, the prizes were re-named as the Gammon Skanska Limited Prizes in Building Technology and Civil Engineering and the Gammon Construction Limited Prizes in Building Technology and Civil Engineering respectively to reflect the change of the company name. In 2006, the donor agreed to extend the prizes for a further five years from 2005–06 to 2009–10 with a donation of $2,000. CALENDAR 4 HKIA Student Medal The HKIA Student Medal shall be awarded annually to final-year Master of Architecture student(s) of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Hong Kong and/or the School of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Ho Fook and Chan Kai Ming Prizes Two prizes of the value of $350 each are awarded each year. In 1998, the value of the two prizes was increased to $700 each. Hong Kong Institute of Architects Student Medal In 1979, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects donated a prize in the form of a student medal for award annually until further notice. Hong Kong Institute of Planners Prizes In 1984, the Hong Kong Institute of Planners donated funds for the establishment of two prizes to be awarded to students reading for the degree of MSc(UrbanPlanning). Hong Kong Institute of Real Estate Administration Prizes In 1998, the Hong Kong Institute of Real Estate Administration donated three prizes for 1998–99. For BSc(Surv) I and II students, the prizes are of the value of $5,000 each and for BSc(Surv) III students, the prize is of the value of $10,000. In 2000, the donor continued the prizes from 1999–2000 onwards. Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors Prize In 1988, the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors donated until further notice a sum of $2,500 per year for the establishment of a prize to be awarded annually to a student entering the second year of the BSc(Surv) curriculum. The Institute increased the value of the prize to $3,000 from 1990–91. In 1997, the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors increased the value of the prize to $8,000 with effect from the 1997–98 academic year. In 2005, the prize shall be awarded annually to a maximum of two students entering the second year of the BSc(Surv) curriculum. In June 2007, the prize award was divided equally between students entering the second year of the BSc(Surv) curriculum, and graduates of MSc(RealEst) majoring in General Practice Surveying and MSc(ConstProjectMan) majoring in Quantity Surveying, on the basis of academic merit. J.H. Kinoshita Prizes In 1979, Mr J.H. Kinoshita donated a sum of $10,000 for the establishment of two prizes in architectural design in the form of books to be awarded annually. In 1985, a further donation of $10,000 was added to the fund and the number of prizes was increased to three each year. Prizes 5 Professor K.C. Lye Design Prize in Architecture The Professor K.C. Lye Design Prizes in Architecture was established in 2000 with donations from friends and former students of Professor K.C. Lye for the award of the prizes to students who have excelled in Architectural Design in the Department of Architecture of the University Hong Kong. Leigh & Orange Design Prize In 2008, the Board of Directors of Leigh & Orange Ltd. offered to donate a prize to the University of Hong Kong annually from the academic year 2008–09. The value of the prize shall be $20,000. Levett and Bailey Prize In 1979, Levett and Bailey, Chartered Quantity Surveyors, donated a sum not exceeding $300 a year to the University for the establishment of a prize in Building for five years, and in 1982, extended this prize for five more years. In 1988, Levett and Bailey continued to offer the prize for another term of five years up to 1993, and to increase the value of the prize to not exceeding $500 a year. In 1993, the donor continued the scheme for a further five years to 1998, with the prize value increased to a sum not exceeding $700 per year. In 1997, the donor extended the prize for another five years from 1998–99 and increased the value of the prize to $1,000. In 2003, the donor agreed to extend the award of the prize for another five years from 2003–04 and the value of the prize would not exceed $1,000 per year. Minnette de Silva Prize In 1980, Miss Minnette de Silva donated a sum of $3,000 to the University for the establishment of a prize. Sir Ove Arup Prize for Structures In 1978, Sir Ove Arup, CBE, DSc, FICE, FIStructE, of Ove Arup and Partners of Fitzroy Street, London, donated a book prize to be awarded annually for twelve years. In 1990, the Company continued to donate this prize until further notice. Real Estate Tech Prize In March 2009, Mr Stephen Chung and Mr K.K. Wong of Zeppelin Real Estate Analysis Ltd., both HKU alumni, agreed to donate a sum of $10,000 to the Department of Real Estate and Construction, for the establishment of prizes to outstanding first-year surveying students. Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Prize In 1987, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors provided a prize from 1988 until further notice to be awarded annually to a student in any year of the BSc(Surv) curriculum. In 1991, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors increased the value of the prize to £30 from 1990. In 1994, the donor increased the value of the prize to £40 which shall be in the form of a book token. CALENDAR 6 The Royal Town Planning Institute Book Prize In 1987, the Royal Town Planning Institute established an annual book prize to be awarded from the 1987–88 academic year onwards. The prize shall be awarded to a student who is in his/her final year of studies achieving the highest mark in the MSc(UrbanPlanning) dissertation. The University of Hong Kong Surveying Alumni Association Prize In 2002, the University of Hong Kong Surveying Alumni Association offered to donate from 2002–03 onwards, one prize of the value of $1,000 per annum for award to the final-year student pursuing the BSc(Surv) who has attained the highest mark in the Dissertation. Walter Gropius Student Medal In 1981, Professor K.C. Lye donated to the University a prize in honour of Dr Walter Gropius. Y.M. Wong Memorial Prize In 1981, the family of the late Mr Y.M. Wong donated a sum of $10,000 for the establishment of a prize. PRIZES TENABLE IN THE FACULTY OF ARTS Alan John Ellis Prizes in Mathematics (The same entry can also be found on p. 48, under Faculty of Science) Dr Anita Chan Lai Ling Prizes in Chinese Culture In 2001, Dr Anita Chan Lai Ling, MBE, JP, made a donation of $50,000 to establish two prizes to be awarded annually from the academic year 2001–02, to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN1204/YCH10002 Chinese culture in the twentieth century’ and the other to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN1207/YCH10001 Traditional Chinese culture’. Bernard Van Zuiden Prize In 1986, the Trustees of the Bernard Van Zuiden Music Fund donated a prize to be awarded annually to an undergraduate commencing the third year of the BA curriculum reading no fewer than six courses in music. In 1996, the Trustees agreed to increase the value of the prize to $10,000. In 2006, it was agreed that the Prize shall be awarded to an undergraduate commencing the third year of the BA curriculum reading no fewer than 48 credits in music in their second and third year of his/her studies. Prizes 7 Chan Wing Kan Prize in Chinese Language In 2001, the Chan Wing Kan Trustees Incorporated made a donation of $50,000 to establish a prize to be awarded annually from the academic year 2001–02, to the student with the best result in the course ‘CHIN1101 A survey of the Chinese language’. Chan Wing Kan Prize in Chinese Language and Literature In 2003, Mr Chu Hon Sang, Chairman of the Chan Wing Kan Trustees Incorporated made a donation of $50,000 to establish a prize to be awarded annually from the academic year 2003–04, to a second-year student with the best results in Chinese Language and Literature. Charles and Lillian Moore Memorial Prize in Philosophy In 1982, Professor F.C.T. Moore of the Department of Philosophy donated a sum of $5,000 for the establishment of a prize in philosophy in memory of his parents. Cheung Nim-ping Prizes in Chinese Literature In 2001, Mr Cheung Nim-ping made a donation of $50,000 to establish two prizes to be awarded annually from the academic year 2001–02, to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN102 An introduction to standard works in classical Chinese literature’ and the other to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN1103 An introduction to standard works in modern Chinese literature’. Chin Chung Chu Prize in Chinese History and Chak Ping Har Prize in Chinese History In 2004, Ms Kam Pun Pun kindly made a donation of $50,000 to establish two prizes to be awarded annually from the academic year 2004–05, with one of the prizes for award to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2257 The development of Confucianism in late imperial China’ (Chin Chung Shu Prize in Chinese History) and the other to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2259 Historical writing and historiography in traditional China’ (Chak Ping Har Prize in Chinese History). Chiu Ling Yeong Prize in Chinese History In 2003, Dr Ip Sau Sheung kindly made a donation of $50,000, of which $25,000 shall be used to establish a prize to be awarded annually from the academic year 2002–03 to a first-year student with the best results in Chinese History. Chong Chi Kong Prize in History In 1978, Mr Peter Chong Lap Chuen of Hong Kong donated a sum of $5,000 for the establishment of a prize. CALENDAR 8 Comitato della Dante Alighieri di Hong Kong Ltd. Book Prize In 2009 the Comitato della Dante Alighieri di Hong Kong through the Consulate General of Italy offered to establish a prize in the form of book token to the most outstanding student(s) of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures to reward his or her achievements and interest in the study of Italian. The Consular Book Award in American Studies In 2010–11, the American Consulate General, Hong Kong agreed to establish a book prize of $5,000 for outstanding student(s) in American Studies. Consulate General of Italy Book Prize In 2009 the Consulate General of Italy offered to establish a prize in the form of book token to the most outstanding student(s) of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures to reward his or her achievements and interest in the study of Italian. Consulate General of Sweden Book Prize In 2009 the Consulate General of Sweden offered to establish a prize of about $5,000 to the most outstanding student(s) of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures to reward his or her achievements and interest in the study of Swedish. Ding Richang Prizes in History of the Qing Period In 2001, Dr Joseph Sun Pao Ting made a donation of $50,000 to establish two prizes to be awarded annually from the academic year 2001–02. The prizes shall be awarded to the two students with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2226 History of the Qing Period’. Ellis Bell Prize in English Literature and Comparative Literature In 1977, an anonymous donation of $8,000 was received by the University for the establishment of a prize. External Examiner’s Book Prize in Philosophy In June 2000, the External Examiner of the Department of Philosophy offered to donate a book prize of the value of $250 to a student from the 1999–2000 academic year onwards. F.S. Drake Prize in Chinese To commemorate the seventieth birthday of Professor F.S. Drake (Emeritus Professor of Chinese and former Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies) in April 1962, members of the Chinese staff of the Department of Chinese and of the then Institute of Oriental Studies, graduates in Chinese since 1953, together with friends of the University, raised a fund of over $5,000 for the establishment of a prize. Prizes 9 Falling Leaves Foundation Prize in Cross-Cultural Studies in English/English Literary Studies In 2010, Falling Leaves Hong Kong Foundation offered to endow one prize in Cross-Cultural Studies in English or English Literary Studies by donating a capital sum of $100,000 to the University of Hong Kong. The prize shall be awarded annually with effect from the academic year 2010–11. George Endacott Prize in History In 2007, to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the re-establishment of the Department of History after the Second World War, the teachers and former teachers of the Department donated a History prize in memory of George B. Endacott (ob. 1971), Lecturer (1946–57) and Senior Lecturer (1957–62) in History. Mr Endacott was responsible, virtually single-handedly, for the re-establishment of the History Department in 1946 and continued to teach in the Department until he took up an appointment as Secretary of the University Appointments Service in 1962. His main research interest was in the area of Hong Kong history, which he established as a respectable field of scholarship in the 1950s. This prize seeks to perpetuate the memory of a man who did much to re-establish the Department of History as one of the principal teaching and research units in the Faculty of Arts during the 1950s. Donations to the capital fund of approximately $25,000 will be made in the five years leading up to the centenary of the Department of History in 2012, together with donations of $1,000 per annum in the same period for the funding of prizes. Helen Moore-Williams Music Prize In 1990, Dr Anne Boyd, the founding head of the Department of Music, donated a sum of $5,000 for the establishment of a prize in Music in honour of her mother’s sister. The prize is to be awarded annually to a BA student with the highest academic results in Music in the First Examination. Ho Chuk Ping Prizes in Chinese Literature In 2001, Mr Ho Chuk Ping made a donation of $50,000 to establish two prizes to be awarded annually from the academic year 2001–02, to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2123 Shi poetry up to the nineteenth century’ and the other to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2124 Shi poetry: selected writers’. Ho Fook and Chan Kai Ming Prizes Two prizes of the value of $350 each are awarded each year. In 1998, the value of the two prizes was increased to $700 each. H.T. Ho Prize in Fine Arts In 1980, Mrs Wendy Ho donated a sum of $20,000 for the establishment of a prize for award to a student reading fine arts. Ho Pui Hung Prizes in Chinese Prose In 2001, Dr Lee Kwok Wing and Madame Chan Ka Wai made a donation of $50,000 to establish two prizes to be awarded annually from the academic year 2001–02, to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2121 Prose up to the nineteenth century’ and the other to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2122 Prose: selected writers’. CALENDAR 10 Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly 30th Aniversary Prize in Translation In 2007, Mr Man Cheuk Fei kindly made a donation of $25,000 to establish a prize to be awarded annually from the academic year 2008–09 to the student with the best result in the course ‘CHIN2313 Language studies for translation II’. Huey Suen Fat Prize in History In 1983, the University received a donation of $10,000 made in accordance with the will of the late Mr Huey Suen Fat, for the establishment of a prize in history. Hung On To Prize In 2003, a donation of $50,000 was made from the Hung On To Memorial Fund to establish a prize of the value of $1,000 to be awarded annually from the academic year 2002–03 to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN1207 Traditional Chinese culture’. James Legge Prize To commemorate both the University’s Golden Jubilee and the publication by the University Press of Dr James Legge’s Chinese Classics, the James Legge Prize was founded with a fund of $5,000 donated by the London Missionary Society in 1961. Jao Yu Tsong Memorial Prize in Music In 1996, Professor Y.C. Jao donated a sum of $40,000 to establish a prize for award to a student who has achieved the best overall results in the BA Final Examination Part II. Joseph C.K. Yeung ‘Rising Stars of 21st Century’ Award in Translation In 2006, Mr Joseph Chi Keung Yeung kindly made a donation of $50,000 to establish two prizes to be awarded annually from the academic year 2006-07, with one of the prizes for award to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2311 Translation criticism I (English-Chinese)’ and the other to the student with the best results in the course ‘CHIN2312 Translation criticism II (Chinese-English)’. Joseph Yau Sai Man Memorial Prize in English Literature In January 2007, Mr Leung Lit On of the Arts Alumni Association offered to endow two prizes in English literature by donating a capital sum of $100,000 to the University. The prizes are to honour the memory of Joseph Yau Sai Man, a graduate of the University in English Literature (1974) who died in 1998. They are to be awarded to students in the School of English who have shown outstanding academic achievements in a given academic year, with one of the prizes for award to a final-year BA student majoring in English Studies or Cross-Cultural Studies in English and the other to a BA student in the penultimate year of study majoring in English Studies or Cross-Cultural Studies in English. Lai Chi Hsi Prize in Chinese History In 2001, Mr T.C. Lai made a donation of $50,000 to establish a prize to be awarded annually from the academic year 2001–02 to a third-year student with the best results in Chinese History.
