Preview Principles of Comparative Politics

The groundbreaking first edition of Principles of Comparative Politics offered the most comprehensive and up-to-date view of the rich world of com- parative inquiry, research, and scholarship. Now, thoroughly revised to address the latest developments in the Middle East, the conflict in Somalia, the NATO intervention in Libya and more, the second edition offers students an even better guide to cross-national comparison and why it matters. imPortant ChangeS inClude: • A new “Varieties of Dictatorship” chapter, as well as clearer headings • A significant reorganization of the “What Is Science?” chapter so signaling coverage of authoritarian regimes elsewhere in the text; that there is greater emphasis on the scientific method and less focus on the ins and outs of Mill’s methods; • A delegation, or principal-agent, framework is introduced as a unifying framework for analyzing different types of democracy in the “Parlia- • A thorough updating of the book’s more than 250 tables and figures, mentary, Presidential, and Semi-Presidential Democracies” chapter. and new works cited and country-specific bibliographies to aid stu- A slightly modified classification scheme is also used for identifying dent research; these democracies; • New end-of-chapter problem sets that help students work through • An expanded program of maps to allow students to visualize the the theoretical, conceptual, and methodological material that is geographic distribution of various key institutions around the world; presented. “Principles of Comparative Politics is the best introductory textbook I have found. I greatly appreciate the authors’ willingness to present recent research in political science, so that I feel like I am teaching “real political science” rather than a watered-down version for undergraduates. The text encourages students to think in terms of research they might conduct themselves, which I also think is a major contribution.” Sarah WilSon Sokhey, University of Colorado, Boulder “I was very impressed by the scope and depth of this textbook. I am also highly sympathetic to the authors’ goal of teaching students about the scientific method and applying deductive principles to comparative politics. The text provides a clear and detailed explanation of how to think systematically and logically about issues in comparative politics.” Pamela Camerra-roWe, Kenyon College “I really like the approach Principles takes, and am very pleased to finally have a textbook that introduces students to the science of political science in an introductory course. It is the only textbook I would consider for an introductory class on comparative politics.” indriđi h. indriđaSon, University of California, Riverside inStruCtor’S reSourCeS Free downloadable instructor’s resources for Student reSourCeS neW!
