friendly format, is dedicated to Don, Tish and Bev, who make up the R.E.L.l.C. room
professional staff, of the Bull Run Regional Library. This was very much a team project
and I would like to thank them in this public way for their patience and unflagging

Prince William County Will Books D-F (1744-1777) are missing/lost; however,
two bond books survive for part of that period:
• Executor Bonds (for those who left wills), 1753-1786; and
•
Administration Bonds (for those who did not leave wills), 1753-1782
Those two books should mention all persons who died in Prince William County wbo had any
estate. Court minutes 1757-1759 are also lost; court minutes for 1759-1761 survive. ~

FOREWORD
t. From the Arrangement of the Old ....
The microfilmed edition of the General Index to Wills for Prince William County 1734-1951 is arranged in
a quasi-alphabetical order by surname and given name. That is, all of the surnames beginning with A are
together and arranged by given name for A, B, C, D, etc. This same format is followed for surnames from B-Z.
Pages in the General Index to Wills are divided into columns containing information for dates by years,
Surnames and Given Names, and into columns for information for Wills, Inventories, Accounts, Final
Accounts, Heirs, Inheritance Tax and the like for the decedent.
There are major disadvantages to using the index in this format. First, the index is difficult to read. For
example, if you are looking for the heirs of Charles Allen, who died in 180 I, you must go through all of the As,
looking for Allen; Then, you must go through all of the Js to see if Charles left a probate record. If you are
looking for Charles' ancestry, you must also go through all of the "A''s, looking at the given names, to find the
rest of the Allens in the index. Secondly, the column format is also hard to decipher. The will book numbers
are sometimes hard to read; the supplemental sheets in the index are very difficult to interpret. Occasionally,
there will be a citation for the Will Book without a page number to go with it.
2. ..• To the Re-Arrangment of the New
The General Index to Wills found in this published printed volume differs substantially in its arrangement
from the original. While I have kept the column format, I have simplified it considerably. There are five
columns: Date, Surname, Given Name, Instrument and Will Book and page#. The names have been
alphabetized by Surname and Given Name. The probate records have been placed in chronological order by
will book for each decedent under the column called "Instrument". Third, there is an abbreviated index on each
page for surnames.
So, if now, if you are looking for Allens, the abbreviated index indicates that the Allens in Prince William
General Index to Wills are found on page 6. Turn to page 6 to see if Charles Allen left any probate records. He
did indeed: A will, inventory and sales account on different pages in Will Book H. The will is found on page
463, the inventory on page 484 and a sales account on page 541.
Furthermore, the index now shows all other Allens that left probate records. It appears that the earliest
Allen in Prince William County, leaving a probate record was George Allen. The most recent Allen was
Charles B. Allen who left a Will, list of Heirs and a record oflnheritance Tax in 1937.
3. What This Index Is and What This Index Is NOT ...
This index is simply a rearrangement of the content of the original General Index into a more reader
friendly format. It is not an index for all the probate records in Prince William; only, those which appeared in
the General Index to Wills 1734-1951.
It is also not a complete record since there are early will books that are no longer extant. Unfortunately, due
to the ravages of the Civil War, federal soldiers plundered and burned Prince William's Courthouses. Court
record books disappeared. Among those missing from Prince William County were will books D, E, and F.
These will books covered people who died in Prince William during the colonial period, the Revolutionary War
period and the time when the newly formed United States was being established.

It is my hope that the re-format of the General Index to Wills to that found in this volume will be helpful
for researchers who wish to investigate their family's ancestry in Prince William County.
