Henderson, Professor Akira Endo, Distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, I am delighted and pleased to welcome the Prince Mahidol Laureates of the year 2014 who have greatly impacted the world of medical science and public health on a historical scale. I am grateful that both of them have taken the time to come to Siriraj and share their great accomplishments and contributions to us. The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under the Royal Patronage was established in commemoration of the centenary of the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, on January 1, 1992. The Foundation is under the Royal Patronage, with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as President. The Foundation annually confers two Prince Mahidol Awards upon individual(s) or institution(s) that have demonstrated outstanding and exemplary contributions to the global advancement of medicine and public health. Each award consists of a medal, a certificate and a sum of US $100,000. In the year of 2014, the award in the field of Medicine is conferred upon Professor Akira Endo, President of Biopharm Research Laboratories, Inc., and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan, and in the field of Public Health is awarded to Professor Donald A. Henderson, Distinguished Scholar of the Center for Health Security, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Dean Emeritus of Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, the United States. His Majesty the King of Thailand has permitted Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to preside over the Prince Mahidol Award Ceremony on 7 January 28, 2015 at 17.30 hr at the Chakri Throne Hall within the Grand Palace. Prior to the ceremony, Siriraj Hospital, as one of the initiators of the Prince Mahidol Award, has had the honor to invite the Prince Mahidol Award Laureates 2014 to give lectures based on their achievements today. Professor Akira Endo was selected for his discovery of anticholesterol statin drugs with remarkable LDL-cholesterol-lowering properties that have revolutionized the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease. His pioneering work in discovery of statin has been recognized as the major milestone for the prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease as well as other major vascular diseases. The discovery of statin by Professor Endo has shifted the paradigm in coronary heart disease from an unpreventable to a preventable one. His discovery also led to an effective treatment of hypercholesterolemia and a significant reduction of coronary heart disease and stroke, thus saving millions of lives worldwide. Professor D.A. Henderson will receive the award for his leadership and devotion in eradicating smallpox from the world. From 1966 to 1977, Professor Henderson led the WHO Smallpox Eradication Unit and coordinated a global effort of mass vaccination campaign and intensive case surveillance which subsequently led to eradication of smallpox. The smallpox eradication campaign came to a successful conclusion in 1977 when the last case was reported in Somalia. On May 8, 1980, the WHO declared that the global goal of smallpox eradication had been achieved. Smallpox eradication has not only saved billions of lives but also has set an example on how to tackle other health problems more effectively. 8 Both respectable individuals have proven their achievements, after thorough revisions from a judging committee, consisting of world-renowned scientists and public health experts. It is an honor to have both of them as keynote lecturers at Siriraj today. Their insights and experiences will definitely spark great inspirations to our medical students, graduates, residents, fellows, faculty and all medical personnel. Without any further ado, ladies and gentlemen, it is my great pleasure to welcome our honorary Prince Mahidol Award Laureates 2014. I wish both of you a pleasant stay in Thailand and hope we will have further collaboration in many aspects for the betterment of medicine and public health in Thailand. 9 The Special Lectures by the Prince Mahidol Award Laureates 2014 January 27, 2015 at the Rachapanaddasirindhorn Auditorium Srisavarindhira Building, 1st Floor Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand 1.00 pm Registration 1.30 pm Welcome Ceremony 1.35 pm Opening address by Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital 1.40 pm Results of the Prince Mahidol Award 2014 by Clinical Professor Supat Vanichakarn, Secretary General of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation 1.50 pm Introduction of the Prince Mahidol Award Laureate 2014 in the field of Medicine by Doctor Patarabutr Masarattana, Medical Instructor the Department of Biochemistry 1.55 pm Prince Mahidol Award Laureate 2014 Lecture: The Discovery of Statin by Doctor Akira Endo 2.15 pm Introduction of the Prince Mahidol Award Laureate 2014 in the field of Public Health by Doctor Oranich Navanukroh, Medical Instructor of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine 2.20 pm Prince Mahidol Award Laureate 2014 Lecture: The Threat of a Virus by Doctor Donald A.
