Clatsop County Historical Society Quarterly OI O JI. S HI E G A M S I H C C Suffragists often wore white as a symbol of purity, such as the group of WOMEN MARCHING IN AN 1890 PARADE DOWN WATER STREET (nOW COMMERCIAL) IN Astoria. They would later add purple to represent loyalty and yellow TO REPRESENT HOPE — THIS LAST COLOR SELECTED INHONOROfSuSAnB.AnTHONY and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, whohadusedthe sunflower asasymbolin AN EARLIER SUFFRAGE CAMPAIGN. 1)1' 11 .ns Issue... After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, The U.S. immediately mobilized to put into place all manner ol defense. The wide Columbia River was thought to be the way in which an enemy might attempt to enter the area without notice. To make sure enemy subs would not find easy targets along the river, plans were made to mine the river. Robert Stork was one of the men chosen to do the dangerous work of planting the mines. As luck would have it, he met Karen Leedom, who knew the importance of preserving his story, and she has brought it to us. Karen is the author of Astoria: An Oregon History, a book that should be on the shelves of everyone curious about the history of the area. (CCHS also sells her book.) Also in this issue is a story by CCHS Curator Dr. Chelsea Vaughn “Votes for Women; The Fight for Women’s Suffrage in Clatsop County.” Laura Torres has a humorous piece about working in a local restaurant, and last is the strange story of Aeronaut George Weston Daggett. —Tlie Editor Clatsop County Historical .Society Cl A I SOI> ( DL'N I y lilSIOKK Al SOI 11 I V "H l-xchangc St. I’.O. hoxH« Astoria, Dri'jjon 97 lOCOOHS (SO^) Us-22().^ tths(ii''.unitux.orj> C'laasoi* Cdunty Historical Soctlty WWW.cuintux.org Quartlrly I Icritage .Museum VoL. 40, No. 2 — .Spri.sg 2020 16th and hxchange St., Astoria Copyright ' 2020 Clatsop County Historical Society Havel House Museum (ISSN 108A-9216) Hth and Duane St., Astoria Oregon 1-ilm .Museum 7th and Duane St., Astoria Uppertown 1-ireHghters Museum Contents: ^Oth and .Marine Drive, Astoria ho A K 1) (It Dl Kl-t I OKS 2 Mystery Catch l.uke tAilvin, Astoria, OR I’n-siilfiil 5 A World War 11 Story David Reid, Astoria, OR hv Karen Lecilom l ice /’resii/e/it Kent Kasom, Coeur d Alene, 1D IS V'otes tor Women: .Secretiirv hy /)r.
