Clatsop County Historical Society Quarterly 4 9 0 7. 1 # e g a m I S H C C Dick Thompson installing the Tapioloa Park memorial with the ASSISTANCE OF HIS BROTHER DeNNY, ON THE LEFT. SEE STORY ON PAGE 41. hi ' I his Issue . . . According to O. K. Atwood, former City Auditor and Treasurer, approximately seven hundred graves still remain in Hillside Cemetery on Niagara and 15th streets in Astoria. Burials took place from the early 1870s to about 1900. In these years Astoria grew from a small farming community to a city approximately the same size as it is now, exporting enough canned salmon that nearly a dozen men could call themselves capitalists. Residents then were too busy making a living to be concerned about the condition of the cemetery, neglecting it from the start. Now, finally, we can be proud of this place and walk through without viewing open coffins or sfepping on slithering hordes of snakes. This is the story of Hillside Cemetery, interspersed with bits of humor. —The Editor Clatsop County Historical Society Cl AIMII> ClIUN I Y MisrOKU Al Soc ll-TY 714 F.xchangc St. P O Box 88 Astoria, Oregon 97104-0088 (S04) jis-iioi cchs(a)c umtux.org Clatsop County Historical Society www.cumtux.org Quarterly Ileritage Museum Vol..^7, N0.4 —Fall2017 lOth and Kxchange St., Astoria Copyright o 2017 Clatsop County Historical Society Flavel I louse Museum (ISSN 10X3-9216) 8th and Duane St., Astoria Oregon Film Museum 7th and Duane St., Astoria Contents: Uppertown Firelighters .Museum 40th and .Marine Drive, Astoria 2 Incorporation of Astoria by the luiitor BOARD Oh DIRFC FORS Andrew Bornstein, Astoria 5 Cause of Deaths from IS75-IS9()at /’resident Kent Kasom, Astoria Hillside Pioneer CA’inetery, Astoria, V'ue/’res/denI Oregon Luke C^olvin, Astoria Secretary />v the luiitor Kent Ivanort, Astoria 7 Hicjacet Treasurer Jim Aalberg, Portland 9 Over the .\lt)iintains Brett F.stes, Astoria C'raig I loppes, Astoria Paul Mitchell, VV.irrenton 11 Hillside Pioneer Cemetery David Reid, Astoria Patricia Roberts, ticarhart by the h'llitor I I'odd Scott, Seattle Randy Stemper, Astoria 41 Artistry in .Stone S I AFF bv Stanley R.
