E d it o r s V a n d e s a n d e , V e r s The concept of preventive conservation has successfully introduced the tr y n knowledge that “prevention is better than cure” into the built heritage sector. g e The main benefits of this approach are the cost-effectiveness, the improved & protection of heritage values, the reduced risk for accumulating deterioration Va n and additional damage, the prolongation of the physical service life of buildings B and building parts and the empowerment of local communities in dealing with ale n heritage. Increasingly, arguments rise against reactive treatment patterns, which result too often in postponed interventions and increasing costs for restoration. The Civil Engineering Department of KU Leuven, the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation and WTA-Nederland-Vlaanderen, jointly organised an international conference on preventive conservation approaches — including climate and damage monitoring — and how to implement these P monitoring tools within a systemic approach. The conference took place in r e context of the international WTA days, 3-5 April 2019, and the 10th anniversary v of the UNESCO Chair on Preventive Conservation, Monitoring and Maintenance e n of Monuments and Sites (PRECOM³OS). t i v Preventive Conservation: e The contributions in this volume meet the increasing demand for information, C case studies and practical examples to support the transition towards more o From Climate and Damage Monitoring preventive rather than solely reactive conservation actions. The volume consists n of three main parts that deal with practice-oriented and practice-based research: s e to a Systemic Approach From knowledge background to practical applications; Monumentenwacht r v model and new initiatives; Damage diagnosis and monitoring of case studies. a t i o n Editors: Aziliz Vandesande, Els Verstrynge & Koen Van Balen 5 Reflections on Cultural Heritage Theories and Practices A series by the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation, KU Leuven ISBN: 978-0-367-43548-6 www.crcpress.com Volume 5 9 780367 435486 CRC Press titles are available as eBook editions in a range of digital formats A BALKEMA BOOK PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION -FROM CLIMATE AND DAMAGE MONITORING TO A SYSTEMIC AND INTEGRATED APPROACH Reflections on Cultural Heritage Theories and Practices A series by the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation ISSN: 2576-3075 eISSN: 2576-3083 Volume 5 PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL WTA -PRECOM3OS SYMPOSIUM, LEUVEN, BELGIUM, APRIL 3–5, 2019 Preventive Conservation - From Climate and Damage Monitoring to a Systemic and Integrated Approach Edited by Aziliz Vandesande Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation, Department of Civil Engineering, KU Leuven, Heverlee, Belgium Els Verstrynge Department of Civil Engineering, KU Leuven, Heverlee, Belgium Koen Van Balen Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation, Department of Civil Engineering, KU Leuven, Heverlee, Belgium Cover photo: Monumentenwacht in action (Province East Flanders, Belgium), © Monumentenwacht ‘Reflections on Cultural Heritage Theories and Practices’ book series 3.
