Every week, via email, I see a barrage of new products and treatments, each promising to be the elixir of health and happiness. But based on evidence? As regular readers of Prevention know, all of the information we publish in the magazine and online is grounded in solid science. And making sure that claims stack up is part of what we do behind the scenes. So, when something new comes across my desk, I always challenge the evidence. I’m curious to probe into how robust, or fl imsy, the assertions are. This month, I scratched my head at a new ‘health’ tea that claimed all manner of potential benefi ts for women. And, yet, a quick look at the major study it had based its facts on turned out to be only on men. Ethical? Hmmm. But, by far, the standout health hype I saw this month was a novel vitamin supplement that said in fi ne print so small that you’d need a magnifying glass to read it: “We cannot guarantee any results.” Say what? The moral of the story is that, if you’re searching far and wide for quick health fi xes, you’re looking too far. More often than not, it’s right in front of you. Take, for example, this month’s story on the gut microbiome (see page 80) – that curious fl ora you harbour in your belly that weighs more than your brain. Years of research suggests that the gut microbiome plays a key role in your feelings. In fact, most of your happy hormones are produced in your gut and then travel to your brain. Feeding this good gut bacteria is a key reason to eat well. So, this month, we also show you how to set up a Walk with us! healthy pantry and fridge (see page 62), so that eating healthy snacks and delicious, nutritious dinners is just as Grab your sneakers and join us on easy (and cheaper) than ordering Uber Eats!
